The Evil Dead franchise continues its daring experiments. Following the gruesome *The Black Book* and the fun, gory ride that is *Rise*, *Evil Dead Burn* has been released—undoubtedly the most brutal installment in the series.

The plot once again centers on a family, but this time the focus is on relationships with relatives. Alice, the main character, loses her husband in a car accident and, after the funeral, agrees to spend some time with his relatives. As expected, the family dinner turns into a nightmare.

Sebastian Vanicek promised to make a movie that causes physical pain and tests your limits. And damn it, he pulled it off. There’s more gore and dismemberment here than in his previous films; it barely fits within the R rating. But Vanicek goes even further, piling emotional suffering onto the characters: guilt, despair over the loss of loved ones.

*Burn* focuses on this torment with maniacal meticulousness. Injuries are almost always shown in close-up and in full detail. Faces contorted by pain and grief take up, perhaps, half the runtime. Every cut, every blow is filmed in such a way that you feel it in your own skin.

At times, this nightmare is punctuated by brief, amusing scenes. The old woman in the wheelchair serves as the local comic relief: almost every time she appears, she brings a smile to your face. Between the lines, *Burn* offers irony in its own dark style: a family gathering in some households is sometimes hard to distinguish from a horde of demons. It seems that the evil in *Hell* merely brings to the surface the dark thoughts with which the characters are already overflowing. Some even say this outright.

Furthermore, Burn unexpectedly expands the *Evil* lore: from the very beginning, the film demonstrates its connection to *Rise*, and the script is peppered with Chekhovian guns that will yet be fired in the future.

Bottom line: “Hell” is a superb horror film. It’s easily recognizable within the franchise, yet it has its own, very brutal identity. It hasn’t knocked “Rise” off my personal pedestal, but it has given us another fantastic horror experience about absolute evil and the people destined to go through hell.
