A moderator on a YouTube-like website discovers a group of users reenacting murders from the “Faces of Death” franchise in their videos. She must figure out whether the deaths are real or staged.

The new Faces Of Death film is not a remake. It's an entire reimagining of the series. Taking it from it's mockumentary roots and gives the title an actual story to all the murderous slasher mayhem. But was it good?

I will say, parts of it were. Watching Barbie Ferrera try to piece together the mystery behind these videos was an entertaining, if uneven, series of events. The deaths themselves do not reach the gut wrenching, gory heights the title would suggest, but there was enough there for horror buffs to gawk at and admire.

However, in addition to these generally good things, there was also a number of issues towards the end of the film that fell a bit flat for me. Such as the police scene, which in no real world scenario would have gone down the way it did. The final push in the film was pure shock value, and could have been written a bit better. The director also needs to learn how Narcan works so people don't see this film and end up dead. And through the last third of the film, the acting becomes borderline inexcusable. Barbie Ferrera is good, but utterly unbelievable when acting scared.

Overall, not a bad flick and does offer a fair amount of tension. I just wished the director had worked a bit more on the ending and handled it in a less messy way. The meta commentary throughout was an interesting critique on society and our needs to satiate our urge for violence. However, I feel like it was mishandled by the end and we ended up with no true hero, as she gave the killer everything he wanted her to. To me, it's a shame.
