Holly Martins, author of tabloid novels, in the hope of getting a job comes to post-war Vienna at the invitation of an old friend Harry Lime. Alas, just the day before he died in an accident.

The amazing thing about old American movies. Watching movies of the 40s, you can't help but catch yourself thinking that everything in the movie and even the movie itself is not true. Strange things, incomprehensible phrases, ridiculous actions - all this suggests that on the screen appears someone's illusion, and not once existed reality. These black-and-white movies are enchanting and even the most shameful things in such a movie seem insanely romantic.
Post-war Vienna, a brief backstory of events, the main character appears. It seems as if the creators of the film tell a very interesting story, but realizing that there is no time to tell everything about it, they sharply move on to the main events. The protagonist upon arrival in Vienna, faces an incredible series of incidents, in parallel we learn what kind of person he is and painstakingly begin to delve into the plot. But gradually, the ongoing, already heated passions become uninteresting, the viewer begins to savor every frame.
Is it really more than 50 years ago people moved and looked like this? Did all the men wear elegant suits and the women walk around with perfect hairstyles? In the course of the movie, as never before you fall in love with the style of the time, there is no room in your soul for solving mysteries, but only to admire everything that happens on the screen. Even such a fact as a linear sequence of events and that at the end of the movie the bad does not sharply become good and the good bad, does not embarrass the viewer, as we are in beautiful Vienna and like curious children peep at what is happening, hiding somewhere in the corner.
Apart from the brilliant picture, strangely enough, one is happy with individual scenes or even short insignificant moments. The main character rushes with unprecedented speed through the night Vienna in an old car, four soldiers from France, USA, WB and USSR detain a girl, a little boy plays with a ball or a grumpy grandmother wrapped in a blanket mumbles something in German. And there are dozens of such small joys in the movie. Sometimes it seems that the whole movie was conceived for the sake of these little characters.
“The Third Man” follows all the rules of the movie. The hero accidentally passes by the projector, and later, he watches slides on it, getting money, the hero necessarily spends them all, there are no random characters, everyone has their own role, and everyone copes with them flawlessly.
The result is a beautifully shot and interestingly told story, where it is hard to single out any one person, where everything and everyone is united, creating a new world for the viewer for a few hours. This is what a movie for everyone should be, a quality story, where the emphasis is on the movie, not on the problem, the actor or the special effects.
