Coming out of the premiere of the 2nd Joker, I had the feeling that the movie was made not because the creators had some brilliant idea for a sequel, not because of the understatement of the original story and not even because of love for the characters and the universe itself, but only because of the fact that a billion of collections of the 1st part with a budget 20 times less did not leave any room for maneuver. The rules of the movie business in such cases are unambiguous - the sequel to be and there are ideas or no ideas, and to shoot must be. Such a story is typical for many sequels and this movie, unfortunately, was no exception.

One of the main advantages of the first Joker was a solid and complete plot, which showed how the society with its indifference and cruelty raises all the darkest and scariest in a man. This dark, frighteningly realistic script fundamentally distinguished it from other comic book movies and largely ensured its huge success. But here's the trouble: that same plot left little room to maneuver in the same style in Part 2. The 1st movie fully showed the transformation of Arthur Fleck into Joker and in the sequel it seemed logical to see the development of the Joker's story as the iconic villain of the movie universe. But in this version there was an obvious risk of losing the advantages of the original movie, making from a deep psychological movie a usual shooter with special effects. And Todd Phillips and his producers seemed to realize it very well. And as it was necessary to shoot something anyway, they chose a tricky move, in which the story of the 1st part is as if revisited from another angle.

The whole 2nd movie on the background of very sluggish development of events the main character as if chooses who he is: sensitive and vulnerable Arthur Fleck from the 1st part or ruthless and eccentric Joker. Such an approach itself initially seems controversial, but its realization turned out to be quite weak. And most importantly - having put such a choice at the center, the creators seem to have not decided to make it until the end. As a result, the plot of the sequel in general looks crumpled, contradictory and not very logical, and the movie itself turned out to be secondary, low-events and in some places frankly prolonged.

From the pluses it is possible to allocate except that some separate scenes, operator's work and certainly brilliant game of Phoenix. But even he seems not to have understood to the end what his character should come to.

It is impossible to say something unambiguous about Gaga's acting. Her performance can't be called a failure, but the character turned out to be as unprocessed and raw as the whole movie. Except that she sings well. Well, that's probably why they called her here.

By the way about singing: I will not berate the movie separately for the fact that for some reason they made a musical out of it. Thankfully it is already done by almost everyone. I will only say that the moment near the end of the movie, when the character of Phoenix in the story says the phrase: 'I don't want to sing anymore', the hall met with an ovation.

In the end, the new Joker doesn't even fall into the standard pool of sequels that fall short of the original in some ways. This is just a weak work, in everything trying to copy the style and spirit of the first part and not bringing anything new to it.The action of the sequel will unfold in a mental institution “Arkham”, where Arthur Fleck/Joker (Joaquin Phoenix) will first meet Harley Quinn (Lady Gaga).
