Three novellas, two of which mimic screen adaptations by Guy de Maupassant and A.P. Chekhov, and the third actually based on a short story by A.K. Tolstoy, come together in one clinical story that could be called “Selected Phobias of Classical Literature.”

I rarely watch movies on TV lately, mostly because of the abundance of commercials. Today, however, television has made me happy, because it offered me three Mario Bava novels, combined into one horror movie 'Three Faces of Fear'. Immediately disclaimer, the movie was filmed in 1963, so with modern standards to approach it is hardly worth it.
In the first novel we see a girl who gets a call from a stranger and informs her that she will not live to see the dawn. In addition, he describes to her what she is wearing and what she is doing. Almost all the action takes place in one apartment and this confined space gives rise to fear. Music, certain sounds, words and actions of the characters are what scares the viewer. The novel is devoid of special effects, there is no fountain of blood in it, but somehow it still becomes uncomfortable. By the way, the beginning of the story is painfully reminiscent of sensational American 'comedies' like 'Scream'.
In the second novel it will be about bloodsuckers-vordalaks and love. In my opinion the weakest novel, which is not saved even by Boris Karloff. It's just that we've seen so much about vampires already that it's all gotten old. A story about a good family turning into a family of ghouls because they were sorry to kill a bitten relative. Hello Tolstoy!
The third novel is a ghost story about revenge. The most amazing, vivid and really frightening. The music, the constant sound of dripping water tickles the nerves. Doors slamming, lights going out, someone blowing out a candle - it was in all three stories, but it is here that the fear reaches the highest degree. The final scene with the apparition of the ghost reminded me of 'Queen of Spades'. Almost all the action takes place in the same apartment as in the first novel. The ending is instructive and slightly ominous.
After three novellas as a bonus you will get a slightly comic scene with the participation of the same Boris Karloff.
To all fans of good old stories about ghosts, vampires and connoisseurs of chamber horror movies I recommend. There will be almost no blood, the movie is based on acting, scenery and sound and light effects.
