The residents of a small town in Iowa fall victim to an epidemic - a waterborne disease leads to madness and death.

User Review

This movie is from that rare breed that proves the right to life of modern horror remakes.

I will admit at once, if the great and terrible George A. Romero (the godfather of zombie movies) who made the original “The Crazies” back in the seventies, would not have personally blessed the director Breck'a Eisner'a to create a remake - the movie would have taken the lowest position in the list of must-see novelties. As it was, I, like most fans of Romero and the genre in general, was intrigued.

Classic Setups of the genre: 'a small town is struck by an unknown virus, the population turns into death-dealing creatures'.... “The protagonist goes to a bar, and then...”. And here even at the initial stage of the story development the director Breck Eisner (who made a good Sahara 5 years ago by the way) tries to offer us something new. Like, for example, the complete absence of the introductory part, where we would be given long and hard the main characters, that we viewers would sympathize with them, and would be bitterly worried. Fuck it! As they say at the movie makers “makes it or breaks it”. A minimum of dialogues, “water” and unnecessary pseudo deep plans and slo-mo, maximum attention to details and nuances, because, as you know, the devil is hidden in them, and judging by the positive reviews of critics and box office receipts Lukavy clearly visited the set.

It is also worth noting separately that the director is not loaded with the question of what kind of infection-plague-virus. There is no frantic search for a vaccine and a long story of searching for the cause, there is only a consequence. This is the town of Ogden Marsh quarantined as the source of the virus. Dehumanized and depersonalized military personnel are engaged in a sweep, eliminating all living things. The population panics. The infected begin to hunt. A handful of survivors seek salvation.

On actors: during the whole movie Timothy Olyphant shines in all colors. By the fourth ten, the native of sunny Hawaii just so blossomed. It is such actors steal other people's screen time, appearing in the frame. It's just a pity that Olyphant does not play a lot of sharp movies, according to me it is such an actor should become a new action star. By the way, this month starts a new series Justified with Timothy in the title role.

Another find is the restraint with which Eisner presents the infected people. No flesh tearing frothy mouths and red eyes, just a few visual changes. Without too much fuss, they will burn you alive or pierce you with pitchforks before sewing up your mouth and eyes - humanists! That's where the creepiness lies. Instead of a slow rotten zombie to you unhurriedly goes your neighbor.... is he infected? What's in his hands? ....

You see a real live city, you believe it exists. Until everything human disappears with the last ray of light of the night illumination, giving its place under the moon to the raging and all devouring flames of fire and chaos. It is at this point that you will realize that hell on earth may be a lot closer than you think.

“The Crazies” is a sticky atmosphere of panic and chaos, constantly rolling waves of danger, fear and clenched fists. That said, there's no bloody orgy in the style of Saw, just a brilliant visual style and frighteningly accurate sadistic redaction. The scenes at the car wash are perfect proof of that. It's exactly how you want to scare, for comparison remember the brilliant scene in the remake of The Hills Have Eyes when the bastards attack the family for the first time.
