World War II. The Allies torpedoed the German submarine U-571, which was carrying the secret Enigma encryption device. The sub remained afloat awaiting assistance, and the Americans decided to seize the Enigma, sending their submarine S-33 to U-571, disguised as a German vessel. The operation went as well as possible, and the American sailors managed to infiltrate the enemy boat and capture the Enigma, but a German cruiser suddenly appeared and sank the C-33, leaving the sailors with only one way to salvation—the half-destroyed U-571.

User Review

It is quite difficult to summarize the plot in a few words, and even more difficult to do so without spoilers. Lieutenant Tyler (Matthew McConaughey) is an authoritative and highly respected commander who once again fails to get promoted to submarine captain. As it turns out, the command has other plans for him—a special operation to capture the Enigma encryption machine from a damaged German submarine drifting in the ocean, which is rushing to get help.

The operation is quite successful, but all plans are ruined by a German submarine that arrives ahead of time and blows up the American submarine with the entire crew. Tyler and a small part of the crew miraculously find themselves on a nearby captured submarine, which saves them. Within a few minutes, having mastered the controls of the captured boat, they engage in battle with the German submarine and emerge victorious. Now the most important thing remains: to deliver the Enigma to shore without the Germans realizing that the Americans have it, because then the whole operation will be ruined—the Germans will simply change the code, and the Allied forces will be left with nothing.

Opinions about the film varied widely, ranging from “an excellent film in the best traditions of Saving Private Ryan” to “far-fetched theatrical rubbish.” Of course, the film is not perfect. The script contains several far-fetched actions that are unlikely in real life. And there were many “ifs” in the operation, all of which were successfully overcome. But personally, I liked the film because it really looks realistic. When faced with a situation where there is nothing to lose and everyone is doomed to die anyway, people are truly capable of heroic deeds that would be unlikely under normal circumstances — just remember our “Panfilov's men.”

A few words about the actors. Matthew McConaughey did a good job with his role. He really looks like an officer who, by chance, had to lead a small crew of a captured boat. He is unsure of his actions, he is afraid, but he has no choice—the operation and the lives of several of his comrades depend on him. Harvey Keitel also plays his role excellently—due to his lack of education, he will never become an officer, but his life and military experience will help the newly appointed young captain more than once. John Bon Jovi's appearance in the film was also a surprise, although he is not in it very much.

Overall, the film is good and can be watched in one sitting. In addition to good action and a twisted plot, it also has a good component of human relationships in critical situations. It deserves a solid nine, approaching ten.
