The action of this action film takes place on Jupiter's moon in the 21st century. A tough sheriff (Connery) discovers that the miners there are going mad and tries to uncover the reason why.

User Review

The average viewer knows Peter Hyams' name from a couple of action flicks with Van Damme, back when he hadn't yet fallen into the second league; from that very film about the end of the world, which appeared five minutes before the millennium; and from the appalling desecration of the literary legacy of Alexandre Dumas and Ray Bradbury. However, at the turn of the 1970s and 1980s, Peter made three little-known but remarkable science fiction films (Capricorn 1, Alien Country, 2010). Star Wars had just taken the world by storm, and it would have been foolish not to make science fiction films on the wave of such success. But Outland has much more of Ridley Scott's gloominess of that time than the optimism of the Jedi saga...
Having finally mastered interplanetary travel, humanity did the most sensible thing and decided to extract all available natural resources from other planets and their moons. Io (one of Jupiter's moons). A titanium mining colony. Two thousand people living in less than ideal conditions. Is it really so terrible if a few of them go mad and commit suicide, as long as the station continues to produce high yields of minerals and the parent company remains satisfied with the volume of production? This situation suits everyone (especially the colony manager), but not the newly arrived marshal (Sean Connery), who is loyal to the law and will not allow anyone to reproach him. In his quest for justice, Sean finds no allies, no one responds to his call for help, and so he takes up the fight alone.

Sound familiar? Not surprising: Outland is High Noon in space. There is a backwater town, here is a remote colony. Both have a tough sheriff. In both cases, the authorities remain aloof from the problems. In both cases, the tension builds with every passing minute, finding its outlet in the film's final and, with one minor exception, only action scene. Peter Hyams' film has a lot in common with Fred Zinnemann's classic, but almost three decades after High Noon, Hyams has intensified the drama. While in Cynneman's film Gary Cooper and Grace Kelly rode off together to find family happiness, leaving peace and quiet in their wake, in Himes' film the main character still has to win back his wife who left him. Moreover, with Sean's departure, nothing will change: a new marshal will arrive who will not stick his nose where it does not belong; and in a couple of months, Sean himself will be talked about as an eccentric who, for some unknown reason, went against the system.

To be fair, it should be said that in High Noon, the picture changes in the last third, and until that moment, Himes will shoot science fiction in a manner completely different from what we are used to in this decade. The film begins with a three-minute text explanation of the world we are about to see, what is so remarkable about Jupiter's moon, and how to pronounce its name correctly. The technique is banal, but such a simple solution allows many questions to be answered and sets a certain bar of expectations for the upcoming action. Also, pay attention to the characters' clothes and the interiors of various rooms: there is no glitz or glamour; everything is extremely simple and functional, serving a single purpose—to work the shift, get the money owed, hand in the equipment, and get back to Earth.
