It’s foolish to expect any profound ideas from thrillers; they’re meant to do just one thing—keep the audience on the edge of their seats throughout the entire film. In "Identity", no matter how hard you try, you won’t find any philosophical thoughts or musings, but the film maintains tremendous suspense for all eighty-six minutes.
The film is interesting to watch in and of itself, rather than just for the sake of an unexpected twist at the end.

"Identity" is a variation on the theme of "Ten Little Niggers": ten people find themselves in the same place due to circumstances, and after a while, they start dying. The killer is clearly among them. But who is it? And is it really just a coincidence that all these people ended up in the same place at the same time? These are just the first questions that arise while watching the film. The further the plot develops, the more intriguing details the story itself takes on. Starting in its second third, the film begins to present the viewer with all sorts of mysteries, the solutions to which are revealed only at the very end.

Surprisingly, the main plot twist doesn’t happen at the very end, but nearly twenty minutes before the finale. To be honest, I expected anything but this particular twist from the filmmakers. The film offered a plot twist that may not have been all that original, but it was certainly extremely unexpected. Even after revealing its hand, the film didn’t lose any of its momentum, and the filmmakers still had a couple of wonderful surprises up their sleeves that will delight fans of the genre.

Not only did James Mangold (the film’s director) craft a thoroughly captivating story, but he also didn’t neglect the film’s visual elements. The incessant rain, the vivid yet somber visuals, and the exquisite color palette of individual scenes are a feast for the eyes. But the most important thing, of course, is that the beautiful visuals serve merely as a backdrop to a fascinating plot. It is the plot that plays the leading role in the film, not the visual style.

The film opens with several magnificent scenes. The director introduces us to all the characters, and he does so in a rather original way—the characters seem to pass the baton to one another. Various events, coincidentally linked, set the stage for the main plot.

I can’t help but mention the actors who starred in the film. In most cases, the actors played roles similar to those they’d played before, but you don’t notice this at all. The always calm and level-headed John Cusack, the explosive and mysterious Ray Liotta, the beautiful woman with a past—Amanda Peet, the deadly Jake Busey, Alfred Malina as the psychiatrist… Every actor is perfectly suited to their role.
