A sturdy bald man with glowing eyes, who was the head of an entire intergalactic empire, finds himself all alone on a deserted planet. Two groups of mercenaries come to hunt him down at once. Numerous representatives of the local predatory fauna are also not slumbering.
Again knocked out in the box-office locomotives, Vin Diesel returns to the screens of his favorite hero, undeservedly faded into oblivion after the failure of 2004. The scale of work on mistakes is immediately apparent: a very modest budget for such a movie, the story, strongly reminiscent of the wonderful first series, and the bet on the charisma of the central character, rather than on the sprawling computer architecture in the style of VDNH. And, of course, the fight scenes. Let George Clooney talk about politics.

Betrayed by his subjects, whom he acquired in the finale of The Chronicles of Riddick, galactic criminal Richard Riddick (Vin Diesel) is forced to survive alone on an uninhabited, semi-deserted planet. When he finds an abandoned interplanetary beacon, he summons bounty hunters. They expect Riddick to become an easy prey for them (a huge reward is promised for his head). The protagonist hopes to get one of the mercenary ships and fly off in search of his home planet Furya.
During the casting of “Riddick” Vin Diesel was so busy with other things that Katee Sackhoff had to pass the final audition at midnight, at the actor's house
Medium-budget sci-fi horror action movie “Black Hole” was one of the “surprise hits” of 2000. The picture doubled the cost of investors, made Vin Diesel action star and inspired Universal Studios to invest in a large-scale space saga about the hero Diesel “Chronicles of Riddick”. The new tape, however, was not a hit, and in the future Riddick appeared only in video games. Then Vin Diesel as an actor and producer revived the fading film cycle “Fast and Furious” and used his freshly acquired influence to create a third film about a ruthless but fair criminal who sees in the dark. Unlike “Chronicles,” “Riddick” was made on a modest $40 million budget, and it's a hard R-rated production, not a “soft” PG-13-rated film. Hello, moderate nudity (fans of TV star Katee Sackhoff, you can part your lips) and bloody murders!
The picture was shot entirely in pavilions. The director planned to shoot in nature in Canada, but due to production delays, the tape was filmed in winter, and snow was not in the script
In fact, “Riddick” is three movies. The picture begins as a space robinsonade, in which the title character settles on an unfamiliar planet, vrukopasnuyu fights with its monsters and even has a “dog”. Then mercenaries appear in the action, and the tape turns into a slasher, where Riddick leads with bounty hunters psychological games and kills them one by one, trying to get to the locked in the safe power blocks - the ignition keys of spaceships. Finally, the finale of “Riddick” is an imitation of “Aliens” and “Black Hole,” in which the protagonist and the surviving mercenaries join forces to fight off the poisonous scorpion-like monsters that have flooded the planet (these monsters live in the mud and only come to the surface during the rainy season) and fly off to civilized worlds.
The plot diversity of the tape and its atmosphere of a dark space adventure could have made “Riddick” an undoubted hit, if the tape was worked on by a more talented person than director and screenwriter David Touhy. Unfortunately, the author, who began his career with the scripts “Nibblers 2” and “Witchfinder”, has always been second-rate Hollywood, able to build an entertaining narrative, but not able to turn it into a genre masterpiece. In “Riddick,” this is clearly evident. On the one hand - successful script ideas, the charisma of the stars and impressive masculinity of the main character, who does surgery without anesthesia, turns a barely familiar planet into a giant trap and does not lose his composure, even when they try to cut off his head. On the other hand - not always convincing computer effects, insufficiently colorful secondary characters, banal lines instead of bright phrases, weak staging of some fights, the lack of the final epic battle in the spirit of the battle with the Queen in “Aliens”... And measured, sometimes even peaceful action instead of constant tension, which is required by the laws of the genre.
The latter is especially unfortunate, because the drive could have hidden many of “Riddick's” missteps. At least during the first viewing, when the audience forms an opinion about the picture. Tui allows the audience to look and think about what is happening on the screen, and the movie loses from this. Especially against the background of more intense “Black Hole”, the success of which the director and producer tried to repeat. However, fans of space fiction these days do not have to choose. Although this genre is now gaining defense (in October we are waiting for “Ender's Game”!), severe and emphasized manly space films like “Riddick” is still a rarity. So if the genre interests you, it's worth watching. The main thing - do not hope for much. The less you expect from the tape, the more pleasure you will get.
