The movie 'Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow' can be both loved and hated. It is a rare representative of dieselpunk with retro futurism, the main characters of which make a big nod to Agent 007, and the movie itself belongs more to the era when the grass was greener and the villains were mysterious individuals with complicated German surnames and the whole world at stake.
The picture has a lot of problems. The acting, questionable plot decisions, and of course the computer graphics. Almost the entire movie consists of badly outdated effects. And combined with sepia and a little blurring under the look of old film, the picture is hard to watch. But it's the kind of thing I'd play. A wide variety of locations. Action not only in the air and on the ground, but also underwater. Interesting opponents. In general, there is a place to go wild. But now about something else.
I love this movie as it could be. Picking up the layers of graphics, the adventures of the characters and their skirmishes, you can find a character who doesn't appear on screen until the finale. Dr. Tottenkopf himself. As it seems to me, it is his character that expresses the main idea of the movie. How far can revenge go?
A brilliant scientist, resentful of the whole world, has been stealing technology and resources for years. A mind driven by destructive emotions strives to create a marvelous new world, but this will surely lead to the death of the world we know. The motives and reasons for such ideas are unknown to us, but it's even better this way. It distances the villain from any notion of humanity. His Ego has long thought of himself as God.
And only in the finale, when the heroes meet the villain, all the tragedy of the character becomes clear. One phrase is enough to insert a missing detail into the story of a brilliant scientist and his creation.
