User Review
Lenci's short film, which suddenly became the progenitor of the equally disgusting and interesting subgenre of “Italian films about cannibals,” is, to be honest, only very indirectly related to these cannibals—they appear for a couple of minutes and eat some girl from the tribe, they do not touch on this gastronomic theme again.
The film as a whole resembles a report from the Discovery Channel, in the style of “How I Got Along with a Primitive Tribe.” All this is accompanied by several shots of real animal killings (mercy) and illustrations of some aspects of the savages' life, where the protagonist, who has become “one of them,” brings a touch of civility, showing the natives that not all diseases can be cured by dancing with tambourines. That's how they live.
And all this is quite watchable in general, but against the backdrop of later films on this theme - Cannibals or 'Hell of Cannibals', for example - Lenz's film looks rather peaceful and innocent, gradually flowing into a family melodrama, then into a survival film with elements of adventure. The cinematographer quietly captures some rather pleasant shots, the handsome and manly Ivan Rassimov is perfect in the role of a photographer settling into the tribe (who SUDDENLY possesses medical skills), the lovely Mi Mi Lay smiles mysteriously and runs around naked for half the film — what more could you want?
Well, to be honest, I wouldn't mind more brutality. I mean, yes, it's unpleasant to watch animals being killed (just as it will be unpleasant to watch this in Cannibal Holocaust), but I would like to see more harsh makeup, some kind of primitive savagery, malice. I repeat - for a film considered to be the progenitor of the genre, it looks rather peaceful. And, of course, I would like to see some of the script flaws smoothed out and the scenes edited. For example, the main character's girlfriend, who was with him at the beginning - she was present for literally half a minute, after which she disappeared completely. Her purpose? It's shrouded in mystery. And the storyline about the tribe's hostility towards the stranger is clearly not fully developed - the main character's first enemy disappears too quickly, and the shaman, who also had a grudge against him, never made any moves against Rassimov, although this would undoubtedly have added tension to the film.
The bottom line is that this is a measured, even calm film, in which at some point all these scenes of animal and human killings begin to seem excessive, which is strange for a cannibal film. And remember the main thing - a good part of the atmosphere here is created by Daniel Patucci's music, which provides the film with an absolutely stunning soundtrack.
