Space dictator Sador attacks the peaceful planet Akira in order to enslave it. A young man named Shad flees the planet in search of weapons. Eventually, he is joined by several space adventurers, and together they confront Sador and his army of mutants.
Roger Corman's attempt to cash in on the success of Star Wars. The plot is based on the classic western The Magnificent Seven, which itself was a remake of Kurosawa's Seven Samurai. The film contains numerous references to both films, starting with the fact that one of the main roles was played by Robert Vaughn, who played Lee in The Magnificent Seven. And the planet Akira is named after Kurosawa.
In essence, we have the same “Magnificent Seven” only in a space setting. Except that there are a few more mercenaries here, and in addition to humans, there are also representatives of exotic space races. Revolver duels are replaced by battles on spaceships in open space. Roger Corman attracted a decent cast. In addition to Robert Vaughn, the film features rising young star Richard Thomas, George Peppard (Breakfast at Tiffany's) as the Space Cowboy who loves to watch Westerns in flight, and John Saxon (A Nightmare on Elm Street) as the main villain. Young James Cameron was responsible for the special effects, and the film's soundtrack was one of James Horner's first works in cinema.
Cormack made a pretty good space western. Of course, it's no Star Wars, but it has decent special effects for its time, colorful characters (the on-board computer Nell on Shad's ship, which actively engages in dialogue with the hero, is also memorable), and numerous space battles.
