CIA Director Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) is one step away from impeachment. To prevent her detractors in the US Congress from finding evidence that would hasten her resignation, she sends Elena Belova (Florence Pugh) to a secret base to destroy important documents. Soon enough, the superheroine realizes that she has been set up: Valentina has gathered all of her mercenaries — John Walker (Wyatt Russell), Ava Star (Hannah John-Kamen), and Antonia Dreykov (Olga Kurylenko) — in one place to kill each other. Unexpectedly, the killers band together out of mutual hatred and go on the run. There's just one problem: they accidentally free the most powerful superhero in the history of the universe — the mentally unstable Bob (Lewis Pullman).

User Review

A team of “unconventional” heroes who would never be accepted into the Avengers save the world. But their main battle is with themselves.

Strengths:

- Florence Pugh is an acting triumph. Her character is pain, rage, sarcasm, and escape from herself. The dialogue is like bullets, the action is like poetry.

- Human characters. Walker (a loser, but a fighter), Alexei (our “dad” with 200% charisma), Bob (a mystery that is revealed in fire). They are closer than Thor or Captain America — because they fall, make mistakes, and drink vodka with longing.

- Action: Bucky on a motorcycle is a delight. The penultimate battle has many small, inventive details.

Weaknesses:

- Ghost is a pale shadow against the rest.

- The climax could have been more dynamic.

Why it's worth watching:

- If you're tired of “gods in tights,” here the heroes live in the cracks of reality.

- Sarcasm, vodka, and motorcycles instead of pathos.

- Alexei is the epitome of “Eastern European wisdom.”
