Beyond the realm of dreams and reality, in a magical land full of wonders, lived Jareth, the Goblin King. One day, he overheard a girl named Sarah say to her annoying younger brother Toby: “May the goblins carry you away!” — and immediately took her at her word, dragging the little boy away to his castle! “What have I done?” gasped Sarah, and rushed after Jareth, just before the door to the fairy tale slammed shut.

But to get into the kidnapper's castle and save her brother, she will have to pass through the enchanted Labyrinth. It is full of all kinds of monsters, cunning traps, and puzzles. And the exit is guarded by an entire army of goblins! Encountering a host of unseen creatures and solving strange riddles, Sarah bravely delves into the mysterious world of the Labyrinth, step by step approaching the stronghold of King Jareth...

User Review

You remember the swamp of eternal stench? You need to know these things, I emphasize in bold, a-hee-hee.

The plot. Sarah is a young girl. Her parents constantly leave Sarah with her little brother Toby. One day, unable to stand Toby's crying, Sarah (in a fit of rage) utters a terrible phrase: “May the goblins take you away.” A second later (yes, a second), Toby disappears...

One of the best fairy tales of the 80s (it was released in the summer of 1986), and indeed in the entire history of cinema. Understand correctly, this is not just another fantasy film; this is an author's work. Leave the actors, the script, the sets, change only the director — The Maze will fall apart, no doubt about it.

Why? Because the creator of The Maze, the late Jim Henson, had a unique intuition. Whatever he touched automatically turned to gold (which is why it's so sad that Jim passed away so early). For The Muppets alone, Henson deserves a monument. And in 1982, he made the amazing The Dark Crystal, which I highly recommend.

Returning to Labyrinth, the film evokes a storm of emotions. There are places where you can laugh (I was always particularly amused by the combative Sir Didymus riding a dog named Ambrosius, ha-ha-ha). There are places where you can feel sad (check out the magical, surreal scene at the ball accompanied by Bowie's heart-wrenching song “As the World Falls Down”).

David Bowie is inimitable! You want to watch him again and again. Two in one — a brilliant musician and a gorgeous actor. Rumor has it that Michael Jackson was originally planned for the role of the Goblin King. You know, I adore Michael, but I doubt he could have outdone David. The Goblin King is David Bowie, period.

The atmosphere is amazing. There's magic everywhere. There's so much going on here, I assure you, one viewing won't be enough to take it all in. The goblin puppets are awesome – Ludo (who summons stones), Hogle (cowardly but kind at heart), the Garbage Collector (who carries all kinds of junk), the Wise Man (who argues with his own hat), and many others.

Plus, the lovely Jennifer Connelly. In short, you won't be able to tear yourself away. A true classic from the wizard Jim Henson. Don't forget “Labyrinth”...
