After outlaw leader Ben Wade is captured in a small town, his gang continues to threaten. Small-time rancher Dan Evans is persuaded to take Wade (in secret) to the nearest town with a railway station to await the train to the court in Yuma. Once the two are holed up in the hotel to wait, it becomes apparent the secret is out and a battle of wills starts.

User Review

A precursor to Rio Bravo and an undisguised admiration for High Noon. A tribute to the talent of Fred Zinnemann that cannot fail to attract the attention of Western fans. Although the film may not seem particularly original, this new interpretation of the story of a brave man who challenges not so much the bandits as the cowardly residents of the town is quite colorful.

A cautious man, a true family man who takes care of himself, played by Van Heflin (aged and overweight, but still talented), will face off against a tough and experienced criminal. In an effort to earn money, he will be forced not only to guard the gang leader, but also to deliver him to the train, which is an almost impossible task under the circumstances. However, what can be done if the criminal considers himself morally obligated to the main character?

This was a wonderful opportunity to reveal the characters' personalities. And while Van Heflin did an excellent job with his task, Glenn Ford surprised us. A handsome and confident man, radiating success and health, he did not correspond at all to the contradictory notes that the script gave to his character. A dreamy Brando or a conceited Montgomery Clift would have been perfect here, and there would have been no questions. But Glenn Ford, who was quite monotonous in his clichés, became more positive the more he tried to be “cool.” Without the negative charisma of a “bad guy,” this role “slips out” of the general context. His character is not difficult to understand. No. He just looks almost like an alien.

Incidentally, the cleansing rain in the finale looks like just as much of a foreign element. It symbolically pours down on the joyful heroine Felicia Farr, and here we must thank the creators for not painting it in “golden” tones, because then it would have been impossible to avoid ambiguous hints.

So, for fans of Westerns, this film may seem like a treasure trove of aesthetics accumulated during the period of its release, despite some flaws. Hence my somewhat inflated rating. But for a fully immersive viewing experience, I think the film is completely inferior to the masterpieces mentioned at the beginning of this review.
