The near future. Desperate father Ben Richards decides to take part in the brutal reality show “The Running Man,” hoping to win money for the treatment of his seriously ill daughter. To win, participants must survive while being hunted by a group of killers for 30 days.
Let's start with the fact that this is not so much a remake of the iconic film of the same name starring Arnold Schwarzenegger as a “true” adaptation of Stephen King's work. While the authors of the film with Schwarzenegger took extreme liberties with the original source material and retained only the basic idea, in this case, Edgar Wright and his colleague Michael Bacall really tried to stay true to Stephen King's pen and cover the entirety of King's voluminous work.
However, the latter can be perceived not only as a virtue, but also as the main drawback of this film. It is certainly commendable that all the main plot lines of King's work can be seen on screen. This includes a subtle iteration of the message of the literary source material in the context of the current agenda of a military state, social inequality, and rulers who squeeze every last drop out of their citizens. Nevertheless, it is fair to note that in their desire to cover everything, the authors simply overloaded the story, and as a result, the impression of what we see is rather blurred.
Edgar Wright also made a significant contribution in this regard, as he seems to have not fully decided what kind of film he is making and for whom. The film begins as a typical Edgar Wright film with interesting visual solutions and his trademark humor. Later, it transitions into an entertaining blockbuster. Still later, it becomes something resembling a dark thriller, and by the end, it turns into a social drama. Not only are the transitions between genres unsuccessful, but there is also no sense of narrative rhythm. As a result, the film feels uneven, slightly drawn out, and rather “ordinary.” There is nothing bad and nothing good in the film to simply hook the viewer.
Glen Powell is definitely the soul of the film, whose character is revealed from completely different angles throughout the film, allowing Powell to show off his acting potential no worse than in I Am Not a Killer. Moreover, he definitely carries the whole film. Josh Brolin and Colman Domingo slightly overact in terms of eccentricity, but they look quite bright and interesting. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said about all the other actors, who are practically forgettable when watching the film. Except for Michael Cera, who appears on screen for only about 10 minutes, but is memorable throughout the entire film.
