User Review
Imagine a mix of seemingly incompatible ingredients: take Jackie Chan’s charisma, add the gritty American approach to mid ’80s action films, and season it all with Hong Kong triads. The result is The Protector a film often called the least “Jackie Chan like” in the master’s filmography. Director James Glickenhaus tried to squeeze Chan’s unique physicality and humor into the rigid framework of a standard police procedural, which is why the film sometimes looks like two different movies glued together: dynamic action sequences contrast with drawn out dramatic scenes. If you set aside expectations of a masterpiece, what you get is a solid, albeit uneven, action film with an excellent atmosphere of a bygone era, where a young Jackie is still learning to conquer the West, and the viewer gets a rare opportunity to see him in the unusual role of a “serious” cop without his usual comedic flair.
