A remarkable film created during one of Jackie Chan's most productive periods in 1985. Calling it an action film is like calling Titanic a disaster movie. Yes, there is a disaster, people are drowning, etc., but this is just the backdrop for a melodramatic love story. The same is true in “Heart of the Dragon” — martial arts are not the goal, but a means to show what a person is capable of doing for the sake of brotherly love.
The film is very touching and doesn't give much cause for laughter. That's why it's called “Heart of the Dragon” and not “Fist of the Dragon,” “Dragon Strike,” or “Fury of the Dragon,” although such titles are more typical for Hong Kong cinema. And there are almost no fights in it, except for the decisive battle.
The duo of Jackie Chan and Sammo Hung are two brothers. Sammo plays a mentally disabled 30-year-old man who behaves like a 5-year-old child, and he does it wonderfully. Throughout the entire film, he does not participate in a single fight, even though he directed the film himself. And, truth be told, with his appearance, childish hairstyle, and blue jumpsuit, he looks like a big kid. Well, Jackie is Jackie. He is torn between his work, his girlfriend, and his only brother, whom he must protect from the problems of the “big world.” Perhaps the only film, apart from “New Police Story,” where Chan cries more than he fights...
It's hard to say what makes this film so good — the sentimental story or the usual excellent staging of stunts and fights. However, one thing is certain: the film is captivating and touches the heart. It does not compromise with the viewer, does not pander to them, does not replace feelings with spectacle. Perhaps that is why it is not very well known among the works of famous actors.
