User Review

I watched the movie back in '98, and I liked it a lot more than the first one. The plot is decent—actually, it’s quite good compared to newer fighting movies—with a bunch of new characters, including my favorite, Jax. They replaced the scary Sonya with a beautiful one and showed off her “kiss of death” in the battle with Cyrax. It’s a shame that Raiden is different and doesn’t wear a hat, but by the second viewing, I’d gotten used to that too. But what impressed me most were the bad guys. I saw Shao Kahn and fell in love—the actor is a perfect fit for the role, though a bit on the skinny side. Motaro, Shiva, and the gorgeous Sindel—everything’s done just right. What more could you want?

There are practically no unnecessary characters; except that Ermak and Rain aren’t named, but they made their contribution to the final battle. And there’s that glitchy moment with Milena, when Sonya thinks Kitana has attacked them—how could anyone confuse Milena’s lilac outfit with Kitana’s dark blue one, especially since Kitana doesn’t wear a mask in the movie?

The special effects in the movie look very comical by today’s standards—like something from the second PlayStation—but there aren’t many of them, so you can get through Jax’s battle with the giant pink-and-green toad.
