Princess Kitana (Adeline Rudolf) fell victim to Shao Kahn (Martin Ford), the Emperor of the Outworld, who killed her father and then enslaved her, making her his adopted daughter and a warrior in the upcoming tournament. Representatives of Earthrealm and Outworld will soon clash. To counter the threat posed by Shao Kahn, Lord Raiden (Tadanobu Asano) and Sonia Blade (Jessica McNamee) set out to find Johnny Cage (Karl Urban), a former action movie star whose achievements are limited to winning a Saturn Award. Now, this Earth-bound hero—devoid of magical superpowers—must take part in a tournament to determine the future of humanity.

User Review

Well, it’s nice to see that the director learned from the mess that was the first installment and finally made a fighting movie packed with plenty of brawls. The quality of the fight choreography, alas, remained at the same average level, but I did like the way a couple of the fight scenes were done—they were beautiful and interesting.

I also liked that they’ve moved away from the general gray gloom toward a bright, colorful visual style, lively pacing, and a few jokes and quips—even if they’re a bit forced, at least they’re there. They could certainly have toned down the over-the-top drama a bit, but thankfully they didn’t go overboard. Essentially, they’ve returned to the general style of Paul Anderson’s film, only with blood and bombast—which is definitely a plus. Of course, it’s clear that McQuoid isn’t exactly a world-class director, and given the circumstances, they could have made this cooler, funnier, and more spirited, but with the current state of filmmaking, we can’t really hope for more.

The cast is the same old, same old. The bright spot—or rather, two bright spots—are Johnny Cage and Kano; they’re good enough to warrant their own joint spin-off.

All in all, it’s quite watchable, a treat for the eyes, and it’s perfectly fine for whiling away an evening with some drinks and good company without any hassle. Of course, it doesn’t come close to the 1995 film—not by a long shot—but they get credit for trying. I had a pretty good evening.
