The young princess Moana (Katherine Lagaya) lives on the exotic island of Motunui, feeling an irresistible pull toward the ocean. When disaster threatens the island, she defies her father’s (John Tui) ban and ventures beyond the reef to save her people from starvation. Out in the ocean, Moana meets the demigod Maui (Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson), who unwittingly becomes her companion on the journey. Together, they must return the stolen heart of the goddess Te Fiti and restore the balance of nature, but first they must defeat sea monsters, a gang of coconut pirates called the Kakamora, the giant crab Tamatoa (Jemaine Clement), and the fire demon Te Ka.

“Moana” is vibrant, colorful, and doesn’t try to be anything more than it is. The songs work, the music is captivating, and you don’t want to take your eyes off the special effects. The young newcomer in the lead role commands the screen with confidence: you believe in her, and she doesn’t get lost against the backdrop of either the ocean or the special effects. The story, which we all know by heart from the animated film, still works. And the biggest surprise: the remake doesn’t provoke the backlash that was predicted after the trailers. It’s simply a good, well-crafted retelling.

But two things ruined the whole atmosphere for me.

First—Maui. In the animated film, he was a middle-aged demigod, an eternal prankster whose energy carried half the movie. Here, we’re presented with a weary man clearly in his fifties. An immortal god who looks older than the heroine’s mortal father. Apparently, in this world, immortality comes with a pension and lower-back pain. This ruins the magic more than any special effects.

The second is the rooster. What worked in the animated film doesn’t work here. The computer-generated Hehe doesn’t evoke affection, but irritation: it feels like he was rendered by a different studio that was in a huge hurry and never called back. What’s most disappointing is that a ready-made model was right at hand: the piglet Poa is also computer-generated, but he turned out cute. They should have either brought the rooster up to his level or left him out entirely—the story wouldn’t have suffered in the slightest.

The result is a good, vibrant film with excellent music and a wonderful heroine, but two poor design choices drag it down. It’s worth watching. Just don’t look at the rooster.
