Rudyard Kipling’s Masonic epic in John Huston’s solid film adaptation. Made to last for centuries. A stunning, panoramic film—and, thank goodness, no computer-generated special effects, no substitutes: if you see a crowd, it’s a real crowd, not one cloned from three people using Shift+Insert; if you see a landscape, it’s a real landscape, not one drawn in Corel—or wherever they draw them these days—by a half-drunk programmer. And, I must say, it’s so impressive! It’s simply breathtaking. And it’s sad to realize that they won’t make movies like this anymore.
Aside from the plot—which is quite profound and esoteric in a Masonic sort of way—the film is also interesting because of the Connery–Caine duo. It’s interesting because, despite his prominent, central role, Connery falls short of Kane in every respect, at times looking downright helpless next to Michael and the mountain scenery. Kane, on the other hand, is brilliant and sparkling in a role that might seem uninteresting at first glance.
