Sean Connery wasn't the first Bond—who knew?
Ian Fleming didn't want Connery to play Bond — who cares?

A little history

Who wasn't considered for the role of Agent 007 when producers Harry Saltzman and Albert Broccoli, who owned the rights to virtually all of Ian Fleming's novels, decided to adapt them for the screen? Cary Grant, James Stewart, Richard Burton, David Niven, James Mason, Roger Moore, and Patrick McGoohan. But since Saltzman and Broccoli planned to shoot not one film, but at least five or six, and none of the famous actors wanted to commit themselves to a contract for such a long period with unclear prospects, the producers came up with the idea of inviting an unknown actor who could be associated with Bond by the public. That actor turned out to be Sean Connery, who was brought in by director Terence Young, also not the first choice for the film. In any case, these four people got together and created a film that, to some extent, became the model for all subsequent films in the series.

A little about the film

Of course, when evaluating the film from today's perspective, one cannot help but notice the paucity of special effects and the lack of any drive in scenes where it is vitally necessary (for example, car chases are nothing but boring), and the main villain is not as charismatic as in subsequent films. But we must not forget that Dr. No was already quite harsh and frank for its time, and that the creators were only just beginning to explore and establish the tone and style of the film, without which Bond would be unimaginable today. But a lot was already achieved in Dr. No, and it's no wonder that British newspapers described the film as “a mixture of sex and sadism unprecedented in British cinema.”

A little about the hero

Without a doubt, the film would have been different if another actor had played Connery's role. It was the Scotsman who brought irony and sarcasm to the role, without which the film would have been impersonal and lost in a series of similar action films. Connery's Bond may still be slightly naive (he gets very upset when the villain eats the cyanide hidden in a cigarette), but his naivety is compensated for by his toughness, especially in the scene where he kills the unarmed Professor Dent (“You've already used up your six bullets”). This toughness is also evident in Bond's scenes with his numerous women. But even these scenes do not cause rejection — they only speak to the character of the agent. Cynical, tough, invincible, a lone agent — this is how Bond appears in his chic debut on the screen, and this is how he will remain in the Connery era — no other version is needed.

A little about icons

Where would we be without them: Bond's first line (“Bond. James Bond”), his ever-present vodka martini (" shaken, not stirred'), the banter with Moneypenny, Ursula Andress emerging from the sea, and, of course, John Barry's legendary theme song—all of these became magnificent highlights and elevated the film to classic status.
