Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie Part 2: Eternal is the most emotionally intense installment of the original duology. The story stops playing games and hits all the right emotional buttons. The film reveals Homura’s true role, intensifies the drama of the final arcs, and gradually leads the plot to a powerful, nearly apocalyptic climax. This is why this installment is typically considered the emotional core of early Puella Magi Madoka Magica.

That said, the film has one weakness: like the first feature-length film, it largely stays close to the series, adding almost no new material. This is why some consider it a high-quality retelling rather than a standalone work. Despite this limitation, Eternal captivates with its atmosphere, SHAFT’s visual style, and its transformation of a story about magic into a dark drama about sacrifice, love, and inevitable loss.
