The young prince Ashitaka brought a deadly curse upon himself after killing a boar. An old shamaness predicted that only he himself could change his fate. And so the brave warrior set out on a perilous journey. That is how he found himself in a mysterious land where people, led by the evil Lady Eboshi, were at war with the inhabitants of the forest: spirits, demons, and giant creatures the likes of which Ashitaka had never seen before. And among them was Princess Mononoke—the ruler of the beasts and the daughter of a she-wolf. Now everyone’s fate depends on just one warrior—Prince Ashitaka…

User Review

This film is about the relationship between humans and nature. It’s a powerful environmental manifesto that seems to say directly: “Stop.” There is no right or wrong side here—there are people, and there is nature in all its beauty and pain.

War in this film, in my view, is not a manifestation of evil, but an inevitable clash that has been brewing for a long time and was constantly postponed. Mononoke is associated with nature itself, and her relationship with Ashitaka represents that very fine line that exists between humans and the world around them.

Here, nature saves, nourishes, and provides shelter. But for humans, it’s never enough. From this perspective, the film also speaks to human greed, which leads to the destruction of the environment. It shows how humans ruthlessly take everything from nature without giving anything in return, inflicting ever-greater damage upon it.

For me, this is an honest and unflinching environmental film. There is no romanticization of the conflict here—only a direct, clear reality that leaves room for us to rethink our own relationship with nature and our role in this fragile balance.
