It’s hard to say what *Avatar: The Legend of Aang* means to me. It’s not just an animated series. As a child, it was a world I wanted to be a part of, a story I wanted to be a part of, and characters I wanted to go on adventures with. At the time, this universe captivated me even more than “Harry Potter,” and it remains a favorite to this day.

After the series ended, there was a lot that followed: a controversial animated series about Korra, and frankly unsuccessful attempts at live-action adaptations (this applies to both the 2010 movie and the new Netflix series). That’s why, for many, the animated series about the bald boy remains the gold standard for television animation.

And now news has emerged that a feature-length sequel is coming soon—followed by its leak online six months before the official premiere. Still, I couldn’t resist and watched the leaked version.

The first thing I want to praise this animated film for is its magnificent visuals. It looks simply incredible. The character and landscape designs are beautiful, the blend of 2D and 3D is excellent, and the battle animation is stunning. It’s almost a shame the film wasn’t released in theaters, because it looks like a full-fledged blockbuster. The only thing, it seemed to me, was that the editing and scene transitions during the battles were often too abrupt, which sometimes made it hard to follow what was happening on screen. This is especially true when compared to the original animated series, where you can clearly see every movement the characters make during a battle.

The movie is easy to watch, interesting, and dynamic. It wasn’t boring at all. It was nice to see the characters all grown up, yet they haven’t lost any of their former charm.

However, the script raises some questions. The plot includes an expansion of the universe and the world’s history that doesn’t quite fit with the original canon and feels like a fifth wheel. Overall, the movie doesn’t offer any radically new plot twists or conflicts—all of this has been done before. The theme of inequality between benders and non-benders is just like in the first season of *The Legend of Korra*. The theme of the human world and the spirit world growing closer is just like in the second season of *The Last Airbender*. The villain resembles the antagonist from the third season of *The Last Airbender*. The joy of meeting a bender of one’s own element, followed by disappointment in his views, is just like in the “Puppeteer” episode from the Book of Fire.

The humor is a mixed bag: there were a couple of decent jokes, but the rest seemed pretty mediocre. The scene toward the end with the spirit and the transformations felt strange and cringeworthy.

In my opinion, they should have adapted the earlier comics better. For example, “The Promise,” which raises the very interesting theme of the division of peoples who had already intermingled after the war. Or “The Search,” which reveals the fate of Ursa—Zuko’s mother. These events really fit harmoniously into the canon.
