After the death of her father, Lydia and her daughter Astrid and stepmother Delia return to their old home in the town of Winter River. When Astrid discovers a model of the town in the attic, Lydia has to tell her about Beetlejuice, a mischievous and extremely unpleasant ghost whose name must never be said three times. But the girl's curiosity takes over - she opens a portal to the afterlife. Beetlejuice begins to terrorize all the living again....

I've been a huge Tim Burton fan since my earliest years. When I was seven, I watched Corpse Bride for the first time, and over time I got to other time-tested projects. For me, this director was the first to reveal the magic of filmmaking. He showed how enchanting and boundless the world on the other side of the screen can be, and how interesting it can be to immerse yourself in it.

I watched the first part of “Beetlejuice” as a teenager and I remember clearly how I was captivated by the image of the main anti-hero of the movie. The horizontal striped suit became desirable, and the atmosphere of the half-puppet, half-grotesque world stayed in my memory and repeatedly invited me to revisit the movie. And, of course, it was very unexpected and pleasant to hear that 36 years after the premiere of the first part, the second part will be released!

The movie is great. It's a hilarious, fast-paced, well-directed movie that continues the story of the first chapter and even sets the stage for the third (probably final) part. The new faces in the Beetlejuice universe look gorgeous. William Dafoe plays an actor who has gotten into the role of a cop, constantly drinking coffee and practicing cool phrases in front of the mirror. Jenna Ortega organically fits into the role of daughter Lydia, being her almost complete opposite, but giving similar fibers of a young girl with a character. And Monica Bellucci is extremely hot even with all those staples on her body.

Visually, the movie peters out as much as it can. There's stop-motion animation embedded in the actual filming, purely cartoonish inserts, and a black-and-white horror sequence in French that serves as a Beetlejuice prequel episode! There are a lot of fun new ghosts in the world of the dead, from a guy with a bunch of hot dogs in his mouth to a surfer with no lower torso. The entire timeline is one big flight of fancy. And it's a lot of fun and entertaining to watch the first time around

Of course, there are also minuses. At least the undisclosed personality of Dolores (Monica Bellucci), we learn almost nothing about her. The poorly revealed character of the new pesonage, Jeremy, who serves more as a link in the story of the grown up Lydia and her daughter Astrid. For the most part, the movie throws plot lines back and forth (and quite interesting ones at that), but in the end it cuts them off too quickly, as if it were logical and there should be no questions about these very lines.

However, I'm willing to forgive the picture's scripting flaws. Because for the most part it is a stylish and entertaining work with a fascinating vision of life after death. In this regard, I was pleased with the ending, where death is not seen by the characters as something bad. They talk about it as if it's just something ordinary. Although back in the beginning there is a heavy emphasis on emotion when death is mentioned. Characters are shocked by it, sad music is played, and appropriate angles are framed. And at the end such reasoning is filmed as a normal dialog about the weather. And it's a cool solution, showing how easy it is to relate to something complicated and exciting.

Tim's projects always make me want to watch them in a special way, not like ordinary movies. They are shot with quality production by a mature director, but between the lines you can always read that childish “hmmm, what if...”. What if the demon held a family therapy session, what if the arrival of the train to “heaven” was accompanied by Broadway jazz, what if the accidentally deceased occupants of the house, would ineptly try to scare the new occupants. And it has bribed, is bribing, and will continue to bribe!
