The number of musicals that are released to the public and recognized by critics has gone beyond all possible limits. Jacques Audiard has reached the most dynamic genre of cinema. It came out definitely better than the second 'Joker', although hardly anyone will remember any song from it. But it doesn't matter here. Odiar's musical is the perfect glue for plot gaps. And we have to admit, the clever dances and Spanish couplets help in this effortlessly.

At the center of the story is the baron of a Mexican drug cartel. In the middle of the night he is summoned by a frightened lawyer Zoe Saldaña, who is normally engaged in petty business, weaning off another abuser husband from a real sentence after the slaughter of his wife. The head of this vicious but classic for a movie about Mexico business asks the lawyer to help him with his trans transition. Tired of robbery, the drug lord as the same flyboy wants to start a new life and send his wife Selena Gomez and their two children to Switzerland for a while.

Despite the rather extreme beginning, the key message of the movie is the pointlessness of all attempts to become a different person. You can change your gender, start acting like a character from a good children's cartoon, but you can hardly tame your nature to the end. Odiard both agrees and argues with this. As always with him, moralizing didacticism is intertwined with rock 'n' roll scenes. The incarnation of the latter is the sex that oozes from the screen here. The upshot of the former is a certain weariness of them by minute 30.

In 'Emilia Perez', besides the acid play of imagination, where, for example, severed fingers fit, numerous social and psychological meanings are encrusted. Odiard, of course, is not the biggest expert on Mexico and hardly seriously imagines how the slums of Monterrey really live, but he is definitely an excellent psychologist. Odiard, filming a melodrama, and with music, speaks again to the theme of the little man. To make history and make sense of it, it's not so important to be a big jefe, the head of a drug cartel, or to have a gang of tattooed thugs on short notice. In Odiar's Mexican universe, there are no boundaries at all. Not in the pesky desires to change who you are, nor in the dance steps you can dance to shamanic tambourines on the table in front of corrupt ministers.

'Emilia Perez' is a case where awards should be given not to specific people, but to the acting ensemble. Cannes did just that this year - all the women in the movie won a prize. Zoe Saldanha in the role of a clear, but feminine unhappy lawyer gives, perhaps, the best performance of her life, finally got rid of green and blue makeup.
