Based on the short story “The Opera Cylinder” by Clarence Badington Kelland. The movie is directed with such charm and acted by Gary Cooper and Jean Arthur with such charisma that the picture immediately became another phenomenon of Capra's filmmaking.
Longfellow Deeds (Cooper), a redneck from Vermont, inherits his uncle's vast fortune and overnight becomes nationally famous. The whole town gathers at the train station to escort Deeds, a trumpet-playing poet, to New York, where he must take possession of his uncle's capital and move into a huge mansion. The cynical newspaperman McWade (Bancroft) does not believe in the image of a simple honest man created for Deeds in the press. He assigns the beautiful Babe Bennett (Arthur) to interview the guy and gives her unequivocal instructions. The journalist pretends to faint at the entrance to the mansion. The gallant Deeds lifts her up in his arms, caring for her. She informs him that she is out of work and gradually begins to draw out information ...
Capra's direction is impeccable. Cooper is simply made for this role, so naturally and convincingly played. Both he and Arthur remained Capra's favorite actors, who directed them in many more films.

A young man named Mr. Deeds from a small suburb becomes the owner of 20 million dollars, due to his uncle who passed away and bequeathed everything to his nephew. Upon learning of the will, Mr. Deeds moves to New York City, where his uncle lived. Not being rich, the young millionaire is not exactly burning with the desire to take all the money to himself....
The picture perfectly tells about a man with a good soul, fine manners and good upbringing, which is absolutely alien to the city of New York, where people have already forgotten about such qualities and in their ideas lurk thoughts of how to cheat everyone and make a profit on it. The director, Frank Capra, tells it all wonderfully, and also perfectly shows how to fight it. As always, in Capra's movies, good acting and in some cases 'necessary' sentimentality rule the parade. Gary Cooper does a very good job with his character, his acting is unquestionably believable and relatable.
The movie is instructive, exciting and will not give the viewer peace until justice prevails in it (the movie)!
