The movie was a surprise for me. A rare combination of talented direction, witty dialogues, acting and novelty (despite the fact that it is a retro movie).
It's not the first time I've noticed that the most lively and exciting stories are about journalists and their environment. Probably because journalists are cheeky, agile, resourceful and have a well-tongued tongue. You can never get bored with such characters !
Stu Smith appears in a respectable mansion (a huge double echoing mausoleum) and brings a lot of emotions for all its inhabitants. Someone grabs for his wallet, someone for his heart, and a platinum blonde decides to grab him himself.
And here the main character has to part with his independent carelessness, the irreparable happens - he has to wear suspenders for socks, and not simple, but with golden initials ... The fact that he wears the butler's pants and has to be a 'cinderella man' is a consequence of the fact that he traded his freedom for a blonde and suspenders.
The touching and fragile Loretta Young (Gallagher) wins not only the love of a freedom-loving journalist, she wins with her talent and moist velvet gaze. If the cameraman's camera brazenly considers the virtues of Jean Harlow (her outfits, poses, mannerisms), then the spiritualized face of Loretta Young, the camera just admires ...
Some comedic devices deserve mentioning. How the butler bows to Smith is an interesting approach, as if there is a mirror in the distance. How the echo is created in empty halls (this funny scene will be repeated later in another movie with Gary Cooper). And no less original - that Smith at the prompting of Gallagher writes a play on the plot of this movie. The effect is as if the scriptwriter is the hero of this movie himself.
This movie will never get old, it is clear and relevant, funny and instructive. It will not be forgotten in a month or a year...And in three years, if not sooner, I will watch it again. What I wish for everyone.
