Advertising agent Roger Thornhill (Grant) is mistaken for George Kaplan, a mysterious spy no one has ever seen. Roger is kidnapped and interrogated. Since he can't say anything, they try to kill him. He miraculously escapes and tries to find Kaplan in the hope that he can solve the misunderstanding. On the train, Roger meets a girl, a dazzling blonde named Eva (Sainte), who seduces him and offers her help in finding Kaplan.
“North by Northwest” - one of the best thrillers in the history of cinema, created by a man who rightfully bears the name of a genius of the genre. It has everything that Hitchcock is still trying to imitate: murder, intrigue, love story and wit.

A beautiful platitude
- It's silly, Roger.
- I know.
These are the words that end the movie, these are the words I'd like to start my review with. I don't know, maybe I'll be labeled a “mega-expert” and throw rotten tomatoes, but this is not a review by an enthusiastic fan of this movie. Well this is not what I expected from the master of suspense.
The beginning really reminds you that Hitchcock is making the movie. For the first 20 minutes the atmosphere in the film was rising: a respectable advertising man Roger Thornhill is kidnapped by two suspicious types, taken to a mansion and led by his boss they start to interrogate him, as soon as they realize that nobody will tell them anything - they pour a bottle of bourbon and put him over a cliff behind the wheel of a car. But our hero after the bottle turns out to be a daredevil. That will be something else - I want to warn the intruders.
Further the advertising agent in attempts to understand, with whom and why he was confused, at the same time trying to clear his good name, acts purely in the Jamesbond way: he falls in love with girls and leaves bad uncles with a nose. The credit for this goes to both the inconsiderate bandits (well, how could you attack an unsuspecting man in a clear field with a corncob) and the wizard-screenwriter (who saves the hero wherever he can). In that spirit, we get to the end of the movie and the words at the beginning of the review.
After the movie, I somehow thought that Hitchcock made movies more for the mass audience than for gourmets. Because the movie is full of quite spectacular scenes, but they don't really fit into the general plot and laws of logic. The episode with the airplane, which almost everyone knows, is a vivid confirmation of that. At the same time, I must say that the scriptwriter of the movie is quite good - dialogues turned out to be coherent and witty (I advise you to listen if you decide to watch it), but, again, not always to the point. The scene when Roger and Eve want to kiss, but suddenly start teasing each other is a good example.
I would also like to mention the gorgeous editing, which even now is the envy of many clipmakers.
So, Mr. Hitchcock, thank you for 20 minutes of suspense and for showing what James Bond should be.
