After the success of the first two parts, “Sonic 3” comes out with a heavy load of expectations. On the one hand, fans and viewers are hoping for an even more exciting sequel, on the other - the third installment of any franchise always runs the risk of facing “sequel fatigue”. Director Jeff Fowler once again takes the supersonic hedgehog story under his wing. Despite its many bright moments, the movie doesn't always manage to maintain a balance between engaging story, spectacle and emotional content.
One of the strongest aspects of Sonic has always been the visuals, and the third installment continues that tradition. The character animation is top-notch, with Sonic, Tales and Knuckles looking lively, charismatic and highly detailed. Their movements, facial expressions and interaction with the surrounding world give the impression that the characters really exist in reality.
Action scenes deserve a separate praise. Lightning-fast chases, Sonic's acrobatic jumps, Shadow's powerful blows - all this looks exciting thanks to smooth animation and thoughtful staging. The locations where events unfold - from verdant natural landscapes to futuristic bases - are colorful and varied. Each scene is filled with details that immerse the viewer in the world of “Sonic”.
However, despite the visual beauty, it seems that the animation in places tries to compensate for the shortcomings of the plot. The picture is bright and dynamic, but when there isn't a strong story behind it, it can feel superficial.
The main emotional component of the movie remains its characters and their relationships. Sonic continues to be the same energetic, slightly cocky, but charming character that is fun to watch. His interactions with Tom Wakowski (James Marsden) remain one of the key elements of the movie. Their friendship is the anchor that ties Sonic's fantasy world to human reality. However, it's worth noting that their screen time in the third installment is slightly reduced due to the introduction of new characters.
Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik is once again the star of the show. His acting is a mixture of cartoonish absurdity and genuine menace. He skillfully balances between a comedic villain and a charismatic adversary who is really capable of causing the heroes a lot of problems. Nevertheless, his image starts to seem a bit monotonous, especially if you compare it with the first two movies.
One of the main novelties of the movie is Shedou - a tough and strong warrior, voiced by Keanu Reeves. His interaction with Sonic is one of the most interesting aspects of the story. Their opposing characters create both tense and comical moments. However, Shedou clearly lacks elaboration: his character seems important to the plot, but his motivation and development remain on the surface.
Unfortunately, it is the plot that becomes the weak link of Sonic at the Movies 3. The story, of course, contains everything one expects from a Sonic movie: bright adventures, action and humor. However, the overall feel of the story is one of deja vu. The movie relies too much on tried-and-true templates of children's movies, because of which it develops predictably.
The first half of the movie pleases with dynamics and exciting development of events. It sets a good rhythm, introduces new characters and offers some vivid scenes that capture attention. But closer to the finale, the movie starts to lose momentum. Some scenes seem illogical and key moments seem odd because of the illogical script. The final denouement, instead of being a climax, leaves the movie feeling understated and simplistic.
The problem isn't just predictability, but the movie's stakes feel less than stellar. Even in the tense moments, it's clear to the viewer that everything will end happily, which leaves the element of real intrigue missing.
Humor was and still is an important part of the franchise. Here the movie manages a solid four. Most of the jokes work, especially for younger audiences. Sonic's jokes reference pop culture, and Robotnik's behavior elicits laughs with its absurdity.
However, the humor is not always equally successful. Some moments look too forced, and some of the jokes feel like a repeat of previous installments. In such cases, one gets the feeling that the screenwriters tried to play on “safe territory” without risking experimenting with something new.
The tone of the movie remains light and positive, making it an ideal choice for family viewing. But at the same time, this lightness prevents the movie from delving into more serious themes, which could have made it interesting for adult audiences as well.
“Sonic at the Movies 3” is a movie that continues the tradition of the franchise while staying true to its audience. It offers colorful animation, exciting action scenes and familiar characters that audiences have grown to love. For kids and Sonic fans, it's a great choice: fun, light and exciting.
However, the movie is not without its flaws. The plot is too predictable, the ending seems weak, and the development of some characters leaves much to be desired. For older viewers and those who were waiting for something new and deeper, “Sonic at the Movies 3” may seem like a step backwards compared to previous installments.
“Sonic 3” is good family entertainment that will especially appeal to younger viewers and fans of the franchise. Despite some shortcomings in the final part, the movie offers quality visuals, charismatic characters and a sufficient number of exciting moments.
