Kingpin 4K 1996 Ultra HD 2160p
Storyline
Roy Munson was trained by his father from childhood to be the best bowler in the world. As a teenager, he manages to win the Iowa state amateur championship. Not long after this, Roy becomes a bowling hustler along with his partner Ernie McCracken. They soon go up against a group of ruffians who don't take kindly to being hustled by the pair and exact revenge by damaging Roy's bowling hand so badly that it has to be amputated leaving him with a rubber prosthetic. Being the coward that he is, Ernie runs away as Roy is being abused by the gang. No longer able to bowl as before, Roy becomes a traveling bowling equipment salesman. Eventually, he meets up with an Amish bowling prodigy named Ishmael and takes him under his wing as his manager and trainer. He manages, with difficulty, to convince Ishmael, against his conservative Amish sensibilities, to embark on a professional career. Eventually, they cross paths with Ernie McCracken at a championship bowling event that Ernie is favored to win. While Roy's career and life have landed in the toilet bowl, Ernie is still drawing huge crowds and all the babes. Ishmael injures his bowling hand just prior to the big tournament leaving it up to Roy to go up against Ernie at the big event and, hopefully, exact personnel revenge for leaving him to fend for himself against the gang they hustled years earlier. The championship match will determine whether Roy or Ernie is the best bowler.

I don't like the Farrelly brothers, but I really love this movie. Why? It reminds me of that glorious time, when the Farrelly brothers occupied the niche of eccentric comedies, not toilet comedies, and were famous as the creators of the cult masterpiece 'Dumb and Dumber', not the lame 'Love Is Evil' and 'Everybody's Crazy About Mary'. 'Kingpin' is the second film of the Farrelly brothers and it already noticeably smacks of toilet humor, but skillfully balances over the abyss of profanity, not once stumbling. Sortirnaya comedy it can not be called - the humor in the film is coarse and quite straightforward, but this 'farmer's' humor and was in those years a hallmark of comedy.
Perhaps the 'decency' of the picture and explains the extremely low box office figures for Farrelly. Otherwise, why did the idiocy of 'All Crazy About Mary' become a hit, while this wonderful comedy barely broke even? I have no other explanation. Probably, the average American expects from the Farrelly brothers exactly the humor directed at the urinary-sexual system, and in 'Kingpin' there are very few such frivolous jokes.
The movie is very funny, mocking and quite caustic, but in general still kind and even a little sad. Unlike many comedies on the sports theme, here sports competitions are interested in the creators of the picture less than their participants, that is why the main character loses in the movie, which is ochenoy uncharacteristic of sports comedies. That's why the movie shows a whole gallery of diverse and very bright characters, representatives of the 'middle class' of America - everything from the main characters to the disgusting housekeeper Roy - a separate conversation. Memorable images, very interesting, so literally every acting job here can be noted.
The Farrelly brothers are generally smart guys. Well aware that with humor they sometimes have a lot of tension, they bring in their films really great actors who pull even the weakest scripts. Jim Carrey, Jeff Daniels, Ben Stiller, Matt Damon, Bill Murray ... Yes, it is Bill Murray who serves as such a symbol of quality and trademark here. Even those who are not familiar with Harrelson and Quaid probably realize that Murray is a hundred percent mark of quality, for he never does dumb, vulgar and bad movies. Murray knows where to star and how to act. He can play any role he wants. He is probably one of my favorite actors. Despite the fact that he has dozens of leading roles in famous movies, tons of awards and even an Oscar nomination, his role here is kind of secondary. Why as if? Yes, because it is difficult to call the hero of the second plan such a disgusting scoundrel, such a disgusting potsa, hypocrite, poser and boor, which plays Murray. The way he behaves on the bowling alley is a sight to behold! He makes a whole performance out of every throw, a little show. Laughs even when you just see him with a bald head and a huge comb-over sticking out to the side....
But in memory immediately arise the names of other talented actors who decorated with their participation in this movie, no less popular. First of all, Randy Quaid, who doesn't often get to play the main role, although I see him in the movies quite often, so the man gives his best. His hero is a foolish old man, the very naivety, the very childishness, despite the impressive size, he is the most ordinary child - touching and kind. With a sunny gleam in his eyes, funny clumsiness, optimistic attitude to the world, sincerity, protstodushchiye and doggy devotion to his ideals and friends, he reminded me of the heroes of Pierre Richard. Quaid had a wonderful image - on the one hand funny, on the other hand quite nominal and sarcastic.
The movie has a lot of small and big jokes - the life of a religious community is a stereotype, the bowling game is also a stereotype, as well as Roy's life in a 'small American town'.... This is where the Farrelly brothers go all out. Yes, I almost forgot to say about Woody Harrelson, a talented and charismatic actor, who cannot be called a bsuperstar, but who is good in almost any heat and in any roles. Here he played a former champion, now - one-armed down drunkard, who to find himself, needed to find a friend and again feel the former excitement ... Harrelson was perfect for the role. However, as I have already said, here you can say compliments to all the actors - Vanessa Angel is great in the prime of her beauty and sexual aggressiveness, Lin Shaye is disgustingly good in the role of lusty housekeeper Roy, and all the others.
The movie turned out great not thanks to the Farrelly brothers, but in spite of them. Finding the golden mean between funny and vulgar, it is colored by brilliant actors and filled with beautiful music. It is a must-have in your collection!
