A gentle introvert was born with a rare genetic disorder that makes him immune to physical pain. When the hero's girlfriend is taken hostage during a bank robbery, his condition becomes his superpower.

User Review

Let's look at his family tree. Jack Quaid is the son of Meg Ryan and Dennis Quaid. He looks more like his father, but he inherited his mother's ability to smile sweetly in moments of suspense. Ray Nicholson is the son of Jack Nicholson and Rebecca Broussard. He got his cheekbones and jaw from his mother, and his joker smile from his father. Novocaine can be sold in any pharmacy under the brand name of their on-screen confrontation.

Quade's hero is Nate, a quiet introvert. He works in a bank, has only one friend, and even that one is online (he stole him from Peter Parker), and, most importantly, he has an innate insensitivity to pain. It gets ridiculous—Nate doesn't eat solid food so he doesn't bite his tongue, and every three hours he sets a timer to empty his bladder. He's afraid it might accidentally burst. Nicholson's character is Simon, a down-and-out gangster. And he robs a bank. The very same one where Nate works, and what's worse, he takes hostage the girl Nate is about to start dating...

The plot of this standard action movie is no different from a ton of vulgar insinuations on the subject. The same semi-comedic, semi-romantic tone, interrupted by exaggerated violence. Novocaine, as a whole, exists for its own sake. Nate's superpower, which is actually a disability, is a springboard for the wildest fantasies. The hero can be burned with boiling oil from French fries, his bones can be broken in any sequence, use whatever you want - a morning star, a crossbow, a nail puller. Even silver bullets.

Nate is the usual Superman without a cape, looking slightly apologetic every time it comes to fatalities. And although the script performs a few slight balancing acts, it's all secondary. The audience has gathered to watch fractures and dislocations. That's how the genre works. But hardly anyone has any complaints.

Another question is that the violence becomes tiresome somewhere around the middle of the story. All the fights follow more or less the same pattern: the bad guy loses, but at the same time inflicts another injury on the hero. It's hard to imagine that the film could have had any other ending than a banal happy ending. That's how the genre works. But here, too, hardly anyone has any complaints.

As a result, Novocaine is a standard catch-up cocktail for an afterparty. A pleasant addition to a good evening in front of the screen, but hardly something worth talking about in depth. Perhaps if the focus were shifted to the problems of disabled people, their acceptance in society, and the general agenda, the film would take on a new dimension of meaning. But that's for the reflective. Most people take Novocaine as an anesthetic. And that's enough for them.
