User Review

The head of a pharmaceutical company, dying of cancer, calls lawyer Elliot to his mansion, accompanied by his teenage daughter. On the way, Elliot hits a strange creature with his car... a creature with very strange abilities...

This is a very rare film with a high concept (you hit a unicorn, what do you do?), excellent actors (Jenna Ortega! Paul Rudd! Tea Leoni! Will Poulter!), decent special effects, the ‘A24’ logo in the credits... But in the end, the details fall apart, like a horn would fall off a horse's face if unicorns were filmed live.

Is this movie about how being greedy is bad? Or about how you should prioritize your children over your work? Or about how you can't earn all the money in the world? Or about crime and punishment? Who knows!

In the end, it falls short on all fronts. For a horror movie, it's too cartoonish and drawn out. For fantasy, it's too violent. For comedy, it's not funny. For drama, it's not dramatic enough.

There are also questions about the casting. Jenna Ortega seems like a sure bet, but the actress is 22 years old — she looks ridiculous as a helpless teenage daughter with acne.

Some important things in the script remain completely unclear: why did the wealthy pharmacists need the lawyer to take his teenage daughter with him? The reason is stated aloud (so that you can prove your family values to us), but it sounds ridiculous and doesn't work for the plot. And how does the film explain the presence of a wide-format color printer-plotter (for printing copies of tapestries) in a country mansion? Here's how: the hero utters the phrase, “I used to be into large-format printing until I switched completely to archery.” Bravo, screenwriters! Excellent explanation. On the other hand, archery was amusingly mocked in the finale.

In general, I am perplexed. An interesting plot, vivid and colorful images, all kinds of emotions (poor unicorn), entertaining supporting characters (bald servant). But it's all like pieces torn from different films that don't work together. One (or even three) unicorns on screen is clearly not enough to create a magical movie.
