I can't say that my expectations for the sequel to The Naked Gun were too high, but I did have some hopes deep down.
The soft reboot tries in every way to resemble the original and in some places is even indistinguishable, but due to certain creative decisions, the story just didn't work for me.
David Zucker, the screenwriter and director of the original trilogy, even wrote the script for the fourth installment, but for some reason, the studio rejected it, giving newcomers a chance to try their hand at it.
The screenwriters have no experience in parodies, nor does the director, but their joint film Chip ‘n’ Dale Rescue Rangers appealed to the studio and audiences. So the big bosses took a risk and, apparently, it paid off — the critics are satisfied, and the general audience has given the film a warm welcome. Some might even say that the thirty-year wait was worth it.
As for me, my rating would be 5 out of 10. Unfortunately, I can't give it any higher. And there are reasons for that.
First, Liam Neeson, who was cast in the lead male role, with his lifeless organicity, does not fit the image of an eccentric cop at all (although his chubby partner is wonderful). And age has nothing to do with it. For example, Leslie Nielsen from the original trilogy literally sparkled in his rich return, energizing everyone around him. Here, he literally looks like a dead dog with a mournful face from beginning to end. Even his forced grimaces look downright fake. Although the actor didn't really try, as if he were once again playing a serious role in another action movie about an indestructible pensioner.
Secondly, all the humor mixed with action turned out to be extremely boring. In this regard, the authors failed completely. But in their defense, I would like to say that most of the other jokes were interesting. For example, the series of episodes about coffee can be called a really successful find. And I laughed out loud at the tiny episode in the police station, where the detained criminal was photographed like a supermodel for a magazine.
Thirdly, the most serious mistake is the image, goals, and motivations of the antagonist. For this franchise, a supervillain who dreams of destroying the planet is not a box office hit at all. It seems that the authors have confused The Naked Gun with Austin Powers. That's clearly not what's needed here; the story should have been very simple and as absurd as possible. For example, they could have woven into the plot an attempt on the president's ear (a reference to the story with Trump) or once again touched on some royal figures as a tribute to the original. There are countless options, but instead, the writers came up with a terribly hackneyed and tiresome option that evokes nothing but boredom.
In general, I would like to say that the new Naked Gun is a one-time watch, but I would rather recommend rewatching the original trilogy.
