An experienced con artist and skillful manipulator Nikki becomes a victim of not the most successful divorce, behind which is a beautiful Jess. In response to the taunts of a former thief, the girl sets her sights on joining Nikki's team. Very soon she succeeds, moreover, Jess shows a remarkable talent and skills, but fearing that personal attachment, and even more so deep feelings can interfere with the case, Nikki decides to part with the new passport. Three years later, the former lovers meet again while working on a serious fraudulent scheme, but now they are on different sides of the barricades...
Consultant to the film crew in the work of thieves was a famous expert in exposing fraudulent schemes and manipulation Apollo Robbins, nicknamed “gentleman thief”
Audiences love movies about criminals. Even more potential victims of robbery and fraud like stories about talented, daring con artists. Well, if among the main characters will find a place for a real folk star, the people are then able to forget about morality and the law and completely take the side of criminal elements. The heroes of “Focus” do not even try to look law-abiding, they do not support their illegal actions with any justifying explanations or complex moral choices, no, these people are just thieves. But we are willing to empathize with them and even internally justify them. What's the “Focus”?
Especially for the movie, the authors invented a fictional soccer championship, created fake teams and decorated the final match with advertisements for nonexistent goods
As in any manipulation of attention, whether it is a fun prank or criminal intent, the main thing in Focus is the performer. If a fraudster or an illusionist has managed to capture your attention, it's over - he will take a pigeon out of your sleeve so that you will gasp, or vice versa, he will steal your purse with such elegance that you will only applaud. “Focus” takes two performers at once, and it just so happens that both of them due to different circumstances can not play the first violin: Will Smith, who, although he remains a star of class ‘A’, good nothing has not shown for about seven years, and Margot Robbie - a rising star, still just gaining reputation, albeit doing it powerful, bold, broad steps. And this pair only works together, the plot needs both of them, and the viewer is noticeably more interesting those episodes where you can see the spark between Smith and Robbie.
To carve out this spark put a tandem of producers John Recua and Glenn Ficarra, in the piggy bank of previous works of which stand out the script for “Bad Santa” and directing “I Love You, Philip Morris. And by and large Rekua and Ficarra succeeds a lot - “Focus” starts so briskly that the first few minutes the audience has nothing else to do but to absorb with open mouth all the humor, drive and adrenaline of what is happening. And it would be very desirable to praise the script until the very finale (and the script was engaged in the same Ficarra and Rekua), if it were not for the break of the plot in the middle of the picture. “Focus” is as if broken in half about the knee, it consists of two stories, the action of which takes place several years apart, and each of the parts has a different pace, mood, entourage, location and even characters. This is somewhat confusing, and most importantly, it is not clear what it is done for, the story justifies such a gap is quite strained, and some additional dynamics of the actors' play does not give, after all, Smith and Robbie are not the people who are particularly brilliantly able to play fireworks blown out of the extinguished embers of feelings, especially since the viewer is not waiting for this.
The viewer expects fantastic daring robberies, and in this regard, “Focus” boldly walks the path trodden by the trilogy of Danny Ocean's friends and the recent “Illusion of Deception”. Dynamic editing, upbeat soundtrack, fashionable, elegant criminals, at the sight of which the “sucker” himself to be deceived gladly - all this succeeds in the movie to glory, especially in the first part. The second part is significantly weighed down by not the most plausible storyline with an imaginary engineer, but is embellished by Rodrigo Santoro as an ambitious millionaire with devious plans. Changing each other race track and a huge stadium, a palace of receptions and “thieves' den”, hotels and restaurants give the tape a flair of a pleasant journey through the “evil” places, the viewer seems to become part of a team of charming intruders. Agree, this feeling is usually worth a lot.
In general, “Focus”, except for not too well thought out plot failure in the middle, there is nothing to scold for - excellent actors, bright, balancing on the very edge of humor, fantastic scenery, original stunts and cheerful editing practically do not let you get bored. Will Smith as if returned to the times of “Bad Guys” and shoots off with witticisms on the edge, Margot Robbie plays pure sex, confirming the correctness of her choice for the role of Harley Quinn - it is almost impossible to tear yourself away from watching. The main thing is not to lose vigilance and do not leave things unattended in the darkness of the theater, crooks and thieves, as it turns out, can be waiting for you in the most unexpected place.
