The story takes place in 2058, when humans have no more than twenty years left to live on Earth—everything has been depleted. Renowned scientist John Robinson and his family set off on a state-of-the-art spaceship to the distant planet Alpha Prime, which is suitable for habitation, to build hypergates there through which humanity will be evacuated. Extremists send the treacherous Dr. Smith aboard to destroy the Robinson family and the ship itself. Accidentally left on the ship to avoid death, Smith wakes up the Robinsons and Major West, a dashing fighter pilot. To avoid colliding with the Sun, the major activates the hyperdrive, and the spaceship finds itself lost in a previously unknown part of space.

User Review

I haven't watched the TV series Lost in Space, but watching the feature-length version gave me the impression that it wasn't a feature film, but rather one of the episodes, just stretched out a bit. Yes, the film was made to a fairly decent technical standard for 1998, but in essence it's a TV movie. Something like Star Trek for family viewing.

The exemplary American Robinson family flies into space to discover a new planet. The evil Gary Oldman plays a dirty trick on them, and the ship veers off course, and then they embark on a series of space adventures. The first hour and twenty minutes are interesting, but then the plot becomes completely nonsensical.

By the end, the screenwriters completely forget about the main storyline of searching for a planet to live on, drop the characters off in some strange place with a time portal, and force them to walk back and forth through time for no apparent reason. When the head of the Robinson family, his pilot, his younger son, his younger son twenty years later, Gary Oldman, and the mutated Gary Oldman twenty years later finally meet in one frame, and some kind of melodrama begins, I realized that I had completely lost the thread of the narrative and the logic of the authors. And I was not happy about it. The result is a kind of raw project, albeit with good special effects.

And Gary Oldman has absolutely nothing to play here, by the way. He's like a guest star, but the point of his presence on screen is unclear. I got the impression that I had watched the pilot episode of a TV series, where they crammed in several plot lines and laid the groundwork for future sequels. But cinema is not TV, and the audience, who unanimously panned this chaotic film, buried its entire future as a series, so the open ending of the film turned out to be completely unnecessary.
