Maybe I have strange tastes, shaped by classic English comedy like the various shows by Fry and Laurie and Monty Python, but I loved this movie! And I wasn’t the only one—the audience was laughing nonstop. Although, I think knowing certain details makes the movie even funnier. In addition to the obvious reference to Downton Abbey (the setting), there are also nods to the works of Wodehouse (the time period) and, more broadly, all the British classics. And, to be honest, not everyone was treated with the respect they deserve (yes, the great Tolkien got a pretty rough deal from the creators). But modern times aren’t as simple as they seem either. Not everyone got the joke about Alexa and Siri, but it absolutely cracked me up. Unfortunately, a number of jokes lost their “edge” when translated into Russian, but that’s the nature of British humor. Just like Russian humor. Both are difficult to grasp in translation and both require context. That’s probably why so many of us liked the movie, and why we have so many fans of British humor.
The film has a very lively narrative, plenty of clever gags, yet it also has a lot of the audacity characteristic of British comedy. The actors are wonderful, and you could say Damian Lewis has returned to his roots.
The film is recommended for a relaxed viewing on a day off, preferably in English.
