User Review

Strange transformations took place after Lubitsch emigrated to America in the early 1930s. He managed to give Hollywood melodrama a European touch, turning it into a sort of sensual farce. The first thing that catches the eye is the well-written dialogue, which blends harmoniously with the sentimental behavior of all the characters. You don’t have to look far for an example:

-How do you like my dress?
-Lovely, how do you like my hairstyle?
-Exquisite, and how do you like my lipstick? It’s crimson.

Damn it, it’s so simple, but we’re sorely lacking this in cinema today.

These slightly naive but heartwarming dialogues appear throughout the film. Amid a whole slew of modern comedies about two con artists trying to swindle a naive victim, the viewer can see an archaic, adventurous comedy that hasn’t stood the test of time. However, the exquisite charm of Mariette, who nonchalantly accepts her lost purse from the thief’s hands, is a reminder of the director’s signature innocence.

In general, all the heroes and antiheroes of this film—whatever we might call them today—are freaks. François, with his strange memory lapses, who stares at Monescu several times, and all he could recall were those ill-fated tonsils; and Adolf himself, who merely pretends to be the brave defender of a wealthy woman. There’s nothing to say at all about the major and the butler—they’re just bees flitting across the screen, bustling about for their mistress.

Childlike naivety meets evil here, but this evil is devilishly charming. Everyone sticks to their guns: a pair of thieves, acting at times excessively hypocritically and insincerely, are willing to sacrifice their relationship for a quick profit. The plot twist at the very end regarding Lily’s departure for Berlin is never properly resolved. Having gotten what they wanted, they ended up together again, leaving Mariette alone. Lubitsch’s film is a fine example of the refined allure of scoundrels and their deeds. There’s certainly no reason to feel sorry for the wealthy lady or worry about the safety of her money in the safe.
