Earth is set to pass through the tail of a comet—an event that hasn’t occurred in 65 million years, and which last coincided with the event that wiped out the dinosaurs. On the night before the comet’s arrival, large crowds took to the streets to celebrate the occasion.

Eighteen-year-old Regina “Reggie” Belmont works at a movie theater in Southern California. Frustrated by a setback in a video game, she has sex with her boyfriend, the theater’s projectionist, in a steel projection booth. Meanwhile, at Reggie’s house, her sixteen-year-old sister Samantha “Sam” had an argument with her stepmother and got into a fight with her.

The next morning, a reddish fog covers everything, and neither people nor animals nor any signs of life are visible—only small piles of reddish dust and clothing where people had been standing, watching the comet pass by. Reggie and her boyfriend wake up, unaware of anything out of the ordinary. When her boyfriend steps out into the alley behind the movie theater, he is immediately killed by zombie-like creatures. As Reggie goes to look for her missing friend, she comes across a zombie feeding on something. It tries to attack her, but she runs away. Finding herself in a new, desolate world, she heads home and finds her sister there. It turns out that after a fight with her stepmother, the girl had spent the night under a metal awning in the yard.

After figuring out what had happened, they hear a DJ’s voice on the radio, but it turns out to be just a recording. However, they manage to find other survivors—including Hector Gomez, who had spent the night in a steel pickup truck. When Sam spoke on live radio, her broadcast was heard at a government research facility underground. They call and report that a rescue team is already on its way. The scientists claim that although the zombies were less affected by the comet, they will soon crumble to dust.

User Review

A pretty good sci-fi horror movie in the zombie genre with a PG-13 rating. In other words, it’s just the thing for kids’ horror movies in the style of films like "The Gates", "Lumi", and "House of Clowns".

The plot for a zombie movie is quite original. You won’t find the usual cliché here—a virus that infects all living things, turning dead tissue into zombies. There’s no mysticism or voodoo cult bringing the dead back to life. Nor are there any religious rituals performed by necromancers raising the dead from cemeteries using some kind of supernatural power. No, here everything is different and very original.

You’ll be presented with a post-apocalyptic world where, after a comet struck Earth, almost all life has died out, and the main characters are trying to figure out what exactly happened to the world around them.

Speaking of the heroes, the characters are vivid, interesting, and well-developed. It’s fascinating to watch them, share their experiences, and explore this new world alongside them. A motley and colorful crew in a desolate world filled with zombies, struggling to defend themselves and survive.

The zombies themselves aren’t all that great. The makeup is a bit weak, as is the spectacle of their appearances. The visual effects team behind the film was far from the best in the business. And yet, with a budget like that at the time, they could have really delivered something spectacular and terrifying. Despite this, the film recouped its budget fivefold in the U.S. alone, which means it wins over audiences—if not with its visual effects—then with its atmosphere of doom and the struggle for survival. The tension while watching is considerable, but it mainly stems from the uncertainty of what exactly happened and how our planet has been transformed after the apocalypse.

Excellent music accompanies the film’s most tense scenes, fitting perfectly into its atmosphere. The tense, ominous, and jarring melodies keep the film’s suspense at a fairly high level.

Overall, it’s a fantastic, high-quality children’s horror film—a must-see for fans of the genre, preferably at a young age. The film might not actually scare you, but it will certainly keep you on the edge of your seat and immerse you in an interesting, original plot. So it turned out quite well.
