Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman play two witch sisters who are under a curse. Any man they fall in love with wholeheartedly dies, and an ordinary burying beetle serves as a warning sign. Bullock got married, had two daughters, and then a beetle crawled up to her—and her husband was run over by a truck. Kidman went through a string of men, sleeping around left and right, but then she herself fell in love with a man of dubious Transylvanian descent. After a while, he started treating her very roughly, so her sister, called in to help, poisoned the guy. To avoid going to prison, the sisters broke their own promise not to practice witchcraft and brought him back to life, even though their aunts had warned them that anyone brought back from the dead would be very, very bad. And that’s exactly how it turned out…

I like that it depicts women from different generations and their interactions, playing on beauty and then immediately on darkness—but not to the point of making your blood run cold.

A very aesthetic film featuring the classic image of alluring witches who, first and foremost, are still human.

A fairy tale for adults, in the very best sense of the word.
