Girls are friends, girls are not friends, girls come and go, but the band plays on in this film about a high school quartet with only three days to find a stable line-up, choose songs, rehearse and climb the stage at the rock music show of their annual festival. A foreign exchange student as a singer, a sullen guitarist, a shy bassist and a tom girl are a soaking wet band in a high school auditorium.

The plot is pretty simple: the annual school festival. A girl band is preparing for a concert where they’ll perform a cover of The Blue Hearts’ hit “Linda, Linda, Linda,” but the guitarist’s broken finger causes a fight that nearly breaks up the band. The girls need a new lead singer, and they find her in a Korean exchange student named Son. The only problem is that she barely knows any Japanese, and there are only three days left until the festival.

The main characters are ordinary girls at an ordinary school. Don’t expect colorful hair, street fashion looks, bishonen popping out from around the corner, or fan service. Their lives are ordinary, which makes the film a bit boring at times, but even here, things aren’t so simple: nighttime rehearsals, hangouts on the roof, dreams featuring The Ramones, encounters with exes at the rehearsal space, and perhaps with future partners in the back rooms. A declaration of love read from a piece of paper in broken Korean—“I always come to the incinerator to see you”—makes you choke with laughter and feel touched at the same time.

I liked the soundtrack—so light and elusive—the guitar parts, and, of course, the songs by The Blue Hearts.
