It was “Bob”, if chroniclers are to be believed, that started one of the major movements of French cinema. And it was Melville, ironically, who became the father of this movement. And naturally he, as a true author and independent director, refused this title.
As Grigory Darakhvelidze, the only Russian-speaking researcher of Melville's work, writes: “Bob the Player” anticipated the mass appearance on the streets of angry young people with movie cameras in their hands in the late 50s. A movie that gave the stuffy “daddy movie” an injection of reality through its innovative use of Parisian nature and seemed completely unconcerned about its commercial potential. This is the fourth film that looks like the first, as if directed by an amateur filmmaker - with a paltry budget, the use of non-professional actors and attempts at bold experimentation that broke genre canons.”
Well, from myself I will add that the movie is boring in places, funny in places, uninteresting in places, exciting in places. Not my favorite of Melville's work, but its influences are hard not to acknowledge.
“Bob the Player” is not just a masterpiece of policier, it's a masterpiece of cheap policier.” François Truffaut.
