The plot is based on a true story from the 1970s, when paranormal investigators Lorraine and Ed Warren responded to an alarming call from the Perron family. The family had recently purchased a farmhouse in need of renovation, with spacious bedrooms and picturesque views... ...as well as a terrible curse and a witch; for some reason, the real estate agent didn't mention them... Forced to battle a powerful demonic entity, the Warrens face the most terrifying case of their lives.

Ed and Lorraine Warren first rose to fame in the early 1960s when they began investigating various manifestations of the supernatural. Of course, there were plenty of skeptics who believed that the Warrens were deceiving people, but some cases were so unusual and confusing that even the most ardent skeptics had nothing to argue against. James Wan's film The Conjuring tells us about one such intriguing investigation.

The plot takes place in 1971. Ed and Lorraine Warren have been helping people exorcise demons and pacify various restless spirits for over a decade. In their home, they have organized a museum of mystical objects that contain various curses and where it is better not to venture without permission. The characters also give numerous lectures, which traditionally attract full houses. It was at one of these lectures that Carolyn Perron met the Warrens.

Carolyn, along with her husband Roger and daughters, recently moved to the small town of Harrisville, where a large house by the lake was being sold at a bargain price. But it soon became clear why the price was so attractive. It was all because of the curse hidden in the basement of the building, where something terrible had taken up residence. Now it wants to subjugate Carolyn's will, and that won't lead to anything good. And now Ed and Lorraine have to understand what exactly is happening to Carolyn, because it may well be that she has mental health issues. However, the further the investigation goes, the more it becomes clear that this is something mystical and that it will be impossible to figure it out without special help.

What is very good about this film is that it stands out with a very strong dramatic story led by really interesting characters. Moreover, at first, the story is told in such a way that we think that the Perron family is the main focus here, and the Warrens are just there to help. James Wan deliberately devoted more time in the first half of The Conjuring to Carolyn and her loved ones so that we could get to know them properly and empathize with this family's feelings and emotions. Therefore, when bad things start happening to them, you perceive it almost as your own personal tragedy and cannot remain indifferent.

But in fairness, I will say that the plot really comes to life when Ed and Lorraine Warren arrive at the house. Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga are brilliant in their roles, as if they were really a loving couple and confident demonologists. When they appear in the plot, you immediately feel calmer and confident because of the aura they exude. But they will have to work very hard in the Perron house, because the curse here is very strong.

For me, The Conjuring is one of the most interesting horror films in a long time. The film is certainly scary, but at the same time it is a fascinating story that captivates with the life stories of its colorful characters.
