Crispian Davison and his girlfriend Erin go to a family celebration in a country mansion belonging to the parents of the guy. However, no one manages to enjoy communication with relatives. The house is invaded by several masked killers, whose goal is to exterminate all those gathered. But the villains clearly did not count on the fact that Erin has not only the instinct of self-preservation, but also the experience of survival in extreme conditions.

The whole Davison family - parents, three sons with their girlfriends and a daughter with her director boyfriend - gathers for a big celebration at a country mansion. But during a celebratory dinner, one of the guests is killed by a crossbow arrow right through the window. An attempt to get to the car leads to another corpse, and now it's obvious - someone is determined to exterminate the whole family.
From the outside it may seem that the slasher genre has been thoroughly preserved in its clichés and templates many years ago, but in fact it is slowly mutating and changing - some new ideas are popping up, classic moves are coming back into fashion, periodically everything is turned upside down by postmodernist reinterpretations (let's make a note of “Scream” and “Cabin in the Woods”).
One of the first screenings of the film took place at the 2011 Austin Fantastic Film Festival, where it won four awards at once: for film, direction, screenplay, and female role
Specifically, “You're Over” sums up such an intermediate mini-conclusion under the genre molds of the last five years: takes the plot of “Stranger Things” (uncomprehending ordinary people are terrorized by masked killers for no apparent reason) and crosses it with the main thing “The Collector” Marcus Dunstan - a surprisingly enterprising protagonist, who gradually turns from victim to hunter. Now, in 2013, after “The Collector 2” and Ryuhei Kitamura's “Nobody Survived,” this doesn't seem all that original, but here we have to consider that “You're Over” was actually completed back in 2011. In this light, even the decision to use mysterious synthpop as a soundtrack is not opportunistic at all - at that time there was neither “Maniac” nor even “Drive”.
Adam Wingard's next project is called “The Guest”, it is a thriller, and his script is again written by Simon Barrett
Another thing is that to be the first - still does not mean to be the best, and “You're Over”, however frustrating it may be, for all its genre accuracy and sincerity (if the murder, then close-up, with blood in all directions), the tight framework of the genre to push the narrow limits of the genre is not able to push. Characters do not arouse sympathy, logic in their actions is ironclad, or disappears completely (just that the heroes were running away from the windows, through which they were fired from a crossbow, two minutes later, no longer fearing anything, looking into the darkness behind the glass), the action is murderously serious, then falls into macabre black humor.
Adam Wingard, who directed the film, is one of a group of young independent horror filmmakers, who announced themselves quite loudly with the dilemma “S/L/O” and the less successful anthology “The ABCs of Death” (his colleagues on these films, Joe Swanberg and Ti West appeared as actors in “You're Over”, and screenwriter/actor Simon Barrett also worked on these films), and “You're Over” fits right into his resume. It's a competent, articulate, “honest” slasher, made with great love and respect for the genre - yes, it's a bit of a throwaway, trying to be both original and traditional at the same time, but you can't scold it for that. After all, movement is life, and some may even find this approach refreshing. Creative search, however.
