Storyline
Three sisters live together in their late grandmother's house in the city of Kamakura. They have lived together since their dad left home for another woman and their mum imitated her husband by running off with another man. Sachi, 29, the oldest Koda sister, a nurse at the local hospital, acts as a substitute mother to Yoshino, 22, and Chika, 19. One day, the threesome learns of the death of their "traitor" father and it is only halfheartedly that they go to his funeral. But in Yamagata something unexpected happens: they meet their half-sister Suzu, 13, there and immediately fall for the spell of this exquisite young creature. Sensing that Yoko, her father's widow, will not be a fit guardian, Sachi invites Suzu to move in with them.

The movie is based on the manga series “Diary of Umi-Machi” (“Diary of the Sea”) by writer Akimi Yoshida. But after the successful release of the movie on the basis of the film came out and the novel of the same name. And after watching this movie once again regretted that the works of Japanese authors so rarely reach the Russian-speaking reader.
A warm family film with a touch of sadness, a touch of humor and a big dose of optimism. Surprisingly, even the numerous scenes of funerals and wakes are presented by the director in such a way that they do not leave a sad residue in the soul. This picture by Hirokazu Koreeda is an example of a sentimental touching story, which gives warmth and joy, a sense of harmony and happiness. It is a story about love and friendship, mutual care and complicity, sisterly unity. It is not for nothing that the original title of the picture is “Our Little Sister”.
So, three adult girls from the Koda family live together in an ancient family house in Kamakura. After their father leaves them for another woman, their mother leaves them, essentially abandoning them to their fate. Although it happened a long time ago, the sisters can't forget about it. Together, they live together in a spacious house, and despite the different characters - do without any quarrels. One day they receive the news that their father, who abandoned the family a decade and a half ago, has passed away. At the funeral in Yamagachi, Sachi, Yoshino and Chika learn that they have a half-sister, Suzu, who is still in middle school. Suzu's mother died a long time ago, and after the death of her father, Suzu is left with her stepmother and estranged brother. The stepsisters invite Suzu to come and live with them.
All three sisters, Sachi, Yoshino and Chika, immediately recognize Suzu's good nature, which may be why they decided to invite her to live with them at the same time. However, not all of the people around them took it kindly. After all, it was Suzu's mother's father left 15 years ago, and in fact, destroyed their entire family. But the sisters do not blame her for what Suzu herself is not guilty of. Although these painful memories run through the whole picture.
Despite the fact that the sisters live under the same roof - they have completely different personalities, and some views on life. Once together, all four sisters gradually become one big and friendly family. Sachi is the oldest of them, having to take care of Yoshino and Chika since middle school. The girl had no childhood, but she had a lot of worries. Maybe that's why she's always so serious and never makes hasty decisions. It was quite interesting to see Haruka Ayase in this role after a very different character from “Today I'm Taking a Day Off”. Yoshino is the complete opposite of her sister - flighty, easily winded, vulnerable and unlucky. Perhaps this is one of the best roles of Masami Nagasawa, if you do not count the voicing of cartoon characters. This actress noticeably diversified the movie and brought a good flow to it. Because of this, the movie was actually watched in one breath, although it lasted more than two hours. The same can be said about Kaho, who played the youngest of the three Koda sisters, Chika. Her character does not occupy as much screen time as her sisters, but her wise advice, somewhere childish eccentricity, simplicity and straightforwardness are very much in harmony with the movie. The role of Suzu is actually the first major role for Suzu Hirose, a young but promising starlet. Not even a year later, she would show all her skills in the trilogy “Bright Quiet”, “Your April Fool's Lies” and the inimitable thriller “Wrath”. So it's safe to say that her role in “The Umimati Diary” has opened up big horizons for this actress. All four sisters are constantly inseparable from each other and it seems unbelievable the possibility that they will ever separate and each will live his own life.
What I love Japanese cinema for is that subtle soulfulness, a slight touch of romanticism, which are always present in its pictures. The Japanese demonstrate well the inner world of their heroes, and there remains a certain atmosphere of mystery. The musical accompaniment of the film should be especially emphasized - light melodic motifs together with excellent camerawork make this film pleasant for the soul. And the images of nature, which appear with enviable constancy, are also very important here. Through nature, the characters give themselves over to memories, pay tribute to those they love and remember. And all this gives the movie a certain harmonious mood.
As a result, we have a warm and sincere movie, which is pleasant to spend free time with, without loading, although there is something to think about. Everyone can find something for themselves in “Umimati's Diary”, something personal and intimate, which will allow you to think, and maybe even take a new look at many things around us.
