Henceforth, Hess is simply a farmer who farms and raises his children. Shortly after this tragedy, Hess is visited by his younger brother Merrill, a former baseball player, to help harvest the crops. One morning the children discover mysterious “cereal circles” in Hess's field Hess is surprised and outraged, thinking it is a foolish prank by some joker. But soon this version has to be discarded. In the cornfield of a former priest and now a farmer there are mown circles - “witches' spit”, and an incomprehensible threat hangs in the air. Shyamalan's favorite trick - the final twist, which turns all the previous action from a banal thriller into a revelation, long before it was used in almost every issue of “The Twilight Zone” - the cult popular science series of the late 50's, the influence of which always recognized Stephen King.
And this trick worked well in “The Sixth Sense” and “Unbreakable.” But in “Signs” everything is different: the plot has to reveal the secret of the mysterious “witches' spit” almost immediately, and it devalues all the previous mystery. While the retired priest together with his children and younger brother wait and fear the coming of an unknown force, the movie excites and thrills. Competent masters of horror can create suspense even out of thin air: night rustles, a shadow flickering in the corn bushes. But after the director is forced to present aliens as a clue, the tension subsides: unknown evil, drawn by the imagination, usually scares more than all the efforts of masters of special effects.
But Shyamalan still skillfully makes up for it in the finale. Small and seemingly passable details suddenly become crucial to the plot and masterfully loop the story of a renegade priest who, after the death of his wife in a car accident, no longer believes in salvation. It turns out that the path to it may be something that seemed meaningless up until the moment. For example, the last words of a dying wife. Or glasses of water placed throughout the house. And the standard sci-fi plot about an alien invasion goes beyond the “they've arrived” collision and becomes a non-banal story about finding faith.
