On the eve of a holiday, the villagers of Midwich suddenly dropped dead and lay without any signs of life from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., after which everyone, including the animals, got up as if nothing had happened. Some time later, the women of the village became pregnant. The government, aware of similar cases in other countries (where, however, the newborns died), suggested abortions, but the women refused, and an epidemiologist, Susan Werner, was retained to supervise. The children were born at the same time, and, it must be said, the happiness of the parents did not bring. They turned out to be the spawn of evil aliens, they are going to destroy all earthlings to leave behind themselves this still quite decently preserved planet.

According to the script, this tape resembles the storyline about pregnant alien women in the classic series “The X-Files”, only here, of course, the atmosphere is less gloomy, although quite specific. John Carpenter's movies have always been different from other representatives of the same genre. And “Village of the Damned” was no exception.
Actually, this is the last movie in which Christopher Reeve starred. After that, a terrible, tragic accident happened to him, because of which he was permanently paralyzed. And in this movie, he acted as well as any of his other movies - classy. Yes, this is no longer Superman, lifting a car with one hand and a helicopter with the other. This is quite an ordinary man who finds himself in the epicenter of unexplained phenomena. When looking at Reeve, I assure you, no one in the audience will even think of Clark Kent. The same should be said about the other old-school actors: Mark Hamill and Kirstie Alley. Mark Hamill is now a priest, not the savior of the galaxy from “Star Wars”, and Kirstie Alley is not another comedy character, but quite a serious role of a military researcher, who with brave coolness takes up the investigation of the anomaly that occurred in the village.
The plot starts off rather slowly, but Carpenter has always managed to keep the viewer at the screen, even if nothing special happens in the movie. And so it is here. Slowly but surely the details of the mysterious birth of children and their origin are revealed to us. And the closer the narrative gets to the finale, the darker and more tense the action becomes. The final scene in the barn with the suitcase keeps you in incredible tension, and the gorgeous music of the same Carpenter playing in the background makes your heart beat even harder, which makes you think that it will jump out at the end.
Actually, in my memory, this is the last good John Carpenter movie. In my opinion, later he got bogged down in second-rate horror and thrillers, which, unlike his former works, do not bring anything new to the genre. And “Village of the Damned” for the excellent atmosphere, gorgeous music and direction, good acting and participation of forgotten actors.
